We went to alykanas on the 2nd of september with our 2 kids age 4 and 10. We got a ground floor apt with pool view. It was fab. Every morning the kids would hop the wall on our patio and head straight for the pool. The apt was spotless , it was cleaned every day with fresh bed sheets and clean towels every 2nd day. For our first two days we hired 2 quad bikes and drove up the mountains , the view was breathtaking. then we drove to kalamaki in just 40 minutes. Quads are def the best way to get around the island and the kids loved them. They cost €80 alltogether. Another day we went on jet skis , that was briliant craic. On our fourth day we hired a boat . We had it from 9am to 5pm for just €65 , that was including petrol. We drove to the blue caves which is as far as you are allowed to go. Would def reccomend getting a boat , you can stop at any beach on the way , this was our first time doing this and there were no problems. Its very easy to anchor . Another day we went to the water park . It was my first time at a water park and we absaloutly loved it . Back at our apt the pools are great . My favourite is the one right in front of the beach . The beach is gorgeous and the water is very shallow for about 100 metres out so it was very safe for my 4 year old. The water is so clear so we got snorkling gear for swimming about , my 10 year old got great fun out of this.
The food here is brilliant . We ate somewhere different every night and every night the food was brilliant and great value , for the four of us we never spent more than €50.
We didnt go to the shipwreck.............. thats our excuse to come back next year :)

This was exactly as the photographs suggested. Right on the beach with easy access and the sea was warm and great for kids and people like me who don't swim. We are an older couple so were a little dubious with the hotel being a Thomson Family Resort but having the quieter pool and going in early Sept it was fine. The staff in the hotel were good and the Thomson reps exceptionally good with the kids. We did feel (as another reviewer said) that the rooms were a little tired and in need of a refurb. They were however very clean and the bedding and towels were changed regularly. The beds were hard but we seem to find this in all the greek resorts we have been to. With regard to the comments about the stray dogs, we only saw four in the week we were there and they did not approach us at all All they seemed to want to do was lie in the shade. We had a perfect chilled week would def. recommend this holiday.

Room Tip: The apartments which front the sea have wonderful views and all others overlook the pool and mountai...

we spent a two week break in august at this hotel and would recommend it to anyone travelling with young children.
The hotel was in a superb location and as the brochure describes.
the children did not want to come home( 8 year old and two 6 year olds) and i am sure they would return tomorrow given half the chance!!
the hotel staff were very friendly, and the children's club was well organised although the children did not always use it.
the pools were very clean, we all preferred the chill out pool near the beach although sunbeds were not always available
plenty of good restaurants within walking distance i could not complain about any of them.
would have preferred the evening entertainment to be outside but perhaps there is a reason for keeping it inside.
the function room was in the basement and i found it a bit dingy with no atmosphere, perhaps it could have done with having a more Greek theme although it was good for the children and the reps worked hard.
you can make a holiday whatever you want and there are plenty of nice places around the hotel so plenty of choice.
we did a local trip on the road train to visit the museum and local church in the hills passing through local villages along the coastline ending up in a local taverna to sample the local wine.(well worth it )
boat trips are a must,we did not see any turtles but to swim in crystal clear water through the caves is something not to be missed (life jackets are provided on the Thomson trip)
i did hear a rumour that thomsons may turn this into all inclusive but not sure how true this is,but it would be a mistake as part of the whole greek experience is to support the locals who are more than hospitable.
i definitely will return some day but always like to do something different every year so it may be a few years, but a lot of people do go back year after year and i cant blame them.

I have just returned back- travelled with 2.5 yr old and 70 yr old ! nana just relaxed most of the time, booked with thomson, 1 wk stay. The hotel is clean, well looked after in public places ie swimming pools, reception etc, we had a basic studio slept 4,the rooms are basic with 2 ring hob, was not a clean microwave, fridge with small freezer, kettle & toaster. The maid came 6 days to clean & towel change if asked. The bathroom was a fair size as ive stayed in greece before ! with a good size bath to wash your kids down. shower over bath with shower curtain- which was clean. I would recommend this hotel to famillies, pepole travelling with kids, the beach is a stone throw away, very shallow for tots. The park area was great, kept my 2.5yr old entertained, also I pre booked creche sessions before I went. The thomson reps were great. There is also an indoor area where your tots can play , there is a baby play/parent room, soft play room with ball pit was upto 3 yrs, use of little tyke cars etc from morning til late night for free ! it was great always something to do with your little ones. Location is fantastic, 1 min walk to cheap supermarket as the one on hotel grounds obviously more expensive ! then a stroll away from bars & many restaurants- mostly having childrens play areas, some stuff was broken so be careful and check. My favourite restaurant was the lemon tree in old alykanas- we got the horse & cart there and back €5 each way. you must go ! 5 star food, with a great play area for little ones but bouncy castle was old and tatty needed a good hose down - the play area looks nothing like it if you get handed a leaflet but we went back twice. Loved relaxing in jammin bar having few drinks then 5 min walk back to hotel . Never went on any trips as I dont like doing time on holiday, have been on lots of trips before and have visited zante before. definately recommend. would go back again , if stayed for 2 wks would of done few trips as youd get bored as small village. Would give 4 star rating ! would not recommend if staying just couple- as loads of kids - air conditioning is €8 a day or €50 for the wk. Safe in room was €25 for 1 wk.

Room Tip: ask for a beach view if u want more a quiet area. most are based around swimming pools and are noisy...

I spent a wonderful week lazing around the beach and swimming in the sea in Alykanas village and would recommend it to the next person who asked. It was clean, well looked after and beautiful. The excursions were worth a look but I would advise one trip per week otherwise there's little too much time spent on the bus. Without kids the 2 of us indulged at many of the family-run taverns including the one at the end of the beach, on my birthday we ate in memories and the lemon tree where we had a night of live music and greek dancing entertainment. Throughout the week we strolled toward Alykes the beach resort adjacent to alykanas and it was a nice to find of bars and restaurants. Having the beach so close we could walk out and sit on the sunbeds and look up at the stars...it was great.
Our only bad luck was my mobile phone went missing from my apartment near the end of the week and despite numerous attempts to find it I didn't. Knowing that it never left the room all week we reported it to the reception staff who were reluctant to believe it had been taken or even caught up in the sheets. Thompson said we had to pay 50 euros to the police for a statement.....the idea of being sat in a greek police station on our last day to report a phone was not very appealing. Especially when the reception were already siding with their staff. It was unfortunate but I'm glad it happened toward the end of our holiday. If I could have avoided going with Thompson but they offered such a good deal it was unwise not to take it.
