When we turned up at the hotel, once you walked through the door we were wowed by the pool, bar and ethos. It was New Years Eve and we paid for dinner at the hotel which was superb also. BUT! I had also been in touch with the manager beforehand and at no point did he say they were going to throw a full on party on NYE and give us the option of choosing somewhere else. Not only that, he does not wear a mask, nor do a lot of his staff. We have been travelling carefully, always wearing a mask, choosing locations in low risk, low visitor number areas, keeping our distance etc but at this hotel there was none of that. No temperature checks when we arrived and come party time, dozens of people were socialising, dancing, getting drunk in the bar area with no masks and getting very closely and for a brief moment, we let our judgement slip and stayed in the bar for a drink without our masks. When the managers friend knocked over my drink to ring in the new year and didnt replace it, the bartender stuck his insanitary hands into a punch bowl to scoop me up a glass of drink...no way was I going to drink that. Gross, no one during this time should be sticking their hands in your drink. The rest of the world is in lockdown, in most countries there are huge fines for throwing parties so we did not expect this. As we were diving early in the morning in Xcalak and would have to be up early and sober for a long drive, we could not participate in the party. Just our luck, our room was right above the speaker and the music was insanely loud. At 130AM when we realised we would get no sleep, we asked for our money back and went to find another hotel. Guess what, several days later we are sick with Covid :-/ Everywhere else in Mexico was super careful, this place was the wild west and lots of people staying there from Mexico City which is the red zone so visit at your peril. The beds are also a massive pain in the butt to get into
