The Chachapoyas culture is, in my opinion, the most interesting in Peru. The sites have no equal with any peruvian culture, starting with their sarcophagus on the side of mountains and ending with really big places like Kuelap. This place is a must do in Peru.

Incredible place in the Andes bordering with the high amazon for people who like to hike and walk visiting ancient places and ruins, listening to its history.

As interesting as Machu Picchu. Soon the new funiculars will work and save as 90 minutes drive. You have to walk 2.5 kms or ride a horse. It is a 2.5 hour drive from Chachapoyas city. Really interesting to learn about the Chachapoyas culture. Worth the trip. Fly from Lima to Jaen city and drive 2.5 hrs to the city. Cold weather as it is on the mountains at 2.300 meters over sea level and the ruins at 3.3000.

A marvelous place to visit with a guide to explain both the ancient and recent history of the site. It has an aura that will linger long after you have departed. Building started in ?800 AD and continued until 1600 taking in Chachapoyas culture, Inca rule and Conquista domination. Until the Inca, there wasn't a built straight line to be found on the site, just curves following the topography of the bedrock.

Getting there is a bus or tour vehicle journey over bumpy roads but don't be fooled that the soon to be opened cable car route is significantly quicker - you still have to reach the cable car car park, transfer to a bus for a 10 minute trip up to the base station and then ride the cable car, probably only shaving 30 minutes each way off the 90 minute each way journey. That said, the view likely to be afforded by the cable car ride will be terrific.

We visited on 29th July, the day after Peruvian Independence Day when 964 people had visited - the record by some distance. Outside holiday times visitor numbers struggle to break the 100 mark apparently, but these hardy souls are ably catered for by a few locals selling street food at kiosks right by the perimeter of the site well away from the ticket booth.

Atmospheric and soon to be discovered, you'll leave enriched, entranced and with some serious bragging rights.

The fortified city of Kuelap, built by the Chachapoya civilisation in today's region Amazonas in northern Peru is a great place to visit. Currently there are not many tourists and you might have the impression to be lost in time. Take a local guide that will explain you the fascinating history.
In October there should open the new cablecar that will shorten the time to arrive at Kuelap - only 20 minutes instead of 1 1/2 hours from Tingo Nuevo.
