Comfortable, beautiful, fun hotel with surprising DIY craft opportunities

Review of The Gaya Hotel
5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 12 Jan 2024
This hotel is about a 15 minute cab ride from the train station. It's located right by the Railway Art Village and Liyushan Park (鯉魚山公園 or Carp Mountain Park). We were there over New Year's Eve/Day and were able to see the fireworks at the beach from our room, though we were jet-lagged so didn't make it to the city celebrations. It's a little far from the beach and forest parks (about 20 minute walk away) but walking was faster than catching the buses according to Google maps, so that's what we did. The breakfast buffet was good with a nice mix of Asian and Western options and included in the room rate. We had dinner in the hotel one evening; delicious dishes. The green vegetables were perfectly done and my carnivore child actually gobbled them up! The beds were comfortable and wide, and the bathroom was gorgeous. When we checked in, there was complimentary DIY craft opportunity (making your own drip-paint keychain) which was random and fun. I would recommend this hotel for travelers to Taitung!

Room: The room was clean, nicely lit with modern design, there was also plenty of space/surface around to open your luggage or to place stuff. I’m not sure if it’s a thing to have hard beds in Taiwan’s hotels but out of the 6 I stayed for this trip, only GAYA hotel had a nice soft bed! If our schedule were not so packed we would certainly have slept in much longer.
We were on a trip to celebrate our wedding anniversary and the hotel staff left a nice congratulatory note on the bed which lent a personal touch to our stay here.

Location: It is walking distance from many eateries and we easily found 2 great places to have dinner and dessert. Tiehua Music Village is just across the hotel but unfortunately it started raining heavily after dinner and we did not get to visit.

Breakfast: the spread was not super huge but sufficient for me. There was a separate counter for beef noodle soup and my husband got a bowl with generous portion of beef. Perhaps it was off peak season when I was there, but it wasn’t crowded when I had my breakfast.

Overall: We really enjoyed our short stay at GAYA hotel! There were many cute and interesting designs in the public areas of the hotel which made walking around fun too.

We stayed 2nts in a two queen bed room on the higher floor. The room was spacious and fairly clean. There was a balcony with a view overlooking parts of the city and out to sea. I would recommend maintaining the balcony sliding door area and balcony so that can guests can comfortably step outside.

The breakfast buffet has a variety of options but mostly asian. All foods were precooked and were just ok. It would be a nice touch to offer freshly cooked eggs to order. The dinner buffet was also just ok, the highlight was that you could order freshly blanched green vegetables which was suitable for my young children.

This hotel had a lot of foot traffic with coach loads of tourist checking in. Across the road is a night open air market with afew small open air bars. The original railway station site is at the end of this market followed by a shopping mall. If staying on lower floors it could be noisy up until about 11pm or at least before midnight which was when we stopped hearing the entertainment outside from the streets.

We booked this hotel 15mins before we arrived to check in and the price point for the room was quite high for the value, granted it was a weekend and last minute. However it is most likely one of it not the best hotel on offer in the town center of Taitung. We met the owner of the hotel upon check in, she was a kind lady and did her best to accommodate us on such short notice and to make our stay comfortable.

The room and pool are very nice but breakfast gets loud, hot, and crowded. Also at breakfast they don't cover the food which doesn't pass my hygiene level. Lastly checkout is 11:00 am which to me is very early. I wouldn't stay again but the price is decent.

A good enough boutique hotel in Taitung city, which itself does not have many higher end boutique hotels. Close to the night market and food options, within short drive from the airport.
Service is quite good, friendly and professional. Rooms are quite spacious for a city boutique in Taiwan. Bathrooms are cozy and basic, with basic amenities. The only design flaw is that only one side of the bed has power outlets and not the other, very weird.
breakfast is a hybrid a-la-carte and buffet, nothing extraordinary, but not bad either.
Rooftop pool is beautiful but has really odd hours that dont really make sense.

The best hotel we’ve stayed in so far. Clean, modern, with comfortable rooms and a cool rooftop swimming pool. Very good breakfast selection, friendly staff, plus they offer transport to the train station. Restaurants and bars within walking distance.
