After a few attempts we were able to secure a booking with the winemaker himself: Oliver Haag. Such a friendly man. He told us on the phone that he really had little time but we ended up tasting wine together with him for nearly 1.5hours, which took a generous sip out of his working day I reckon.
In total we tasted 8 (!!) wines. Since we favour dry wines we started with their basic dry riesling and made our way up to the Grosses Gewächses (Mosel’s Grand Cru’s). It was truly a pleasure. Oliver’s philosophy is that wine should not be difficult to enjoy. You really taste that in the wines. All have their different characteristics but they share a certain accessibility that makes them really enjoyable.
The estate is over 400 years old and enjoys a very good reputation for delivering top quality wines (evidenced by prestigious awards won on a regular basis). The tasting room has a great view on the winery’s prime vineyard: the Brauneberger Juffer. They have a good website which is worth a visit.
Would most definitely recommend to visit. If you have limited time to spare and have to pick a Weingut to visit; this should be the one.
