We spent four nights here on the recommendation of friends. You can easily spend that amount of time in the Plettenberg area but I am not sure we would choose to stay here again.

Our first impression on arrival was 'wow'. The first place you see is the lounge and dining area which has a very upmarket feel and look about it. We were quite excited when we first arrived, and were really looking forward to seeing our room. In comparison to the lounge the rooms felt very tired, old and in desperate need of a re-vamp. A few additional touches such as, brighter lighting and robes/slippers might have taken the edge off a bit, our room was a bit chill in the mornings.

The very limited wifi is only available in the lounge area (if you download a newspaper that's you're daily allowance all but used up!)

The food is very good and you have the option to eat on your own or at the larger communal table.

I think the staff here were probably the friendliest and most helpful that we can across in our three weeks in SA.

So all in all , some pluses and some minuses.

Lovely place, we stayed as part of a package on a tour. It was a wow place. The views were amazing.

Staff very friendly and the food was yummy. In the evening there was the option of communal eating which made s nice change.

Monkeys visited our room too!

We spent 3 nights here as a family group in 2 rooms. We had a good time but were underwhelmed. There is so much in the way of high quality accommodation in SA that there is strong competition. We stayed at 5 hotels on our trip and booked Hog Hollow on the basis of the fabulous reviews and 4 star rating in upmarket tour operator's brochures.
On the positives, the staff are very helpful and attentive (we never saw the manager), the food too was of a high standard although limited in choice. The hotel is very clean and in a stunning location with lots to do nearby.
The downsides were the fixed evening mealtime of 7.30pm and choosing menu choices earlier in the day as others have commented, limited wifi use with no option to top up and the rather rustic rooms which need upgrading and a few extra touches such as bedside tables and lamps, nice towels and toiletries and more powerful showers. The pool, in a gorgeous position, felt municipal - no parasols , cushions or pool service ( even the supply of regularly replenished complimentary iced water would be appreciated). As such it tended to be used by most people for a quick dip at the end of the day. Indeed most guests go out all day so the hotel felt quiet when I stayed for much of one day to rest from our travelling.

Obviously this is a popular hotel but not one we would choose to return to.

We loved Hog Hollow. Down the end of a country lane, in the thick of the greenery. Lovely people and great food and plenty to see and do in the area. Went horse-riding on what must be the hardest-working horses in Africa, the steep slopes they had to navigate! The nearby monkey and bird centres were breathtaking, and there is a crafts centre close by with a wide selection of beautiful things. And then there is Plett just down the road - we want to move in. One really cool thing at Hog Hollow is the communal dining table (optional). It's pot luck who you get and we had one great evening and one less so, with an opinionated guest, but no risk, no fun, right? Very comfortable accommodation. We wouldn't stay anywhere else near Plett.

Food is really nice, clean rooms, but why has a 4* lodge only got 1 choice for starter and 1 for sweet? Everyone is herded in st 1930 for dinner in one sitting and finally advertised wifi has a max content making it very hard to keep business or even personal matters running with no upgrade facility.
