We are a family of five and have just returned from a one week stay at Fierbois, camping on a standard pitch with our own caravan. As this site is a member of the Les Castels group we had high expectations, particularly because we were paying almost Euro 80 a night. Although the outdoor pool complex was generally excellent, for a five star campsite charging premium prices we were very disappointed overall - the pitches were uneven and not well cared for, the sanitary block was not particularly clean, the showers were cold, the mini golf was unusable (overgrown and reception had no clubs or balls available), the indoor pool was in poor condition, the beach area was overgrown with weeds, and the wi-fi was slow and patchy (despite having to pay a Euro 3 supplement per day).

For this money we expected an outstanding campsite, but I am afraid we were disappointed. This campsite, in its current state, does not deserve to be part of the Les Castels group, and was very poor value for money.

My husband and I stopped off here recently on our way to the Pyrenees. It was a last minute decision, we just found it on the map, saw that it was 5 star and decided to treat ourselves.

Our first shock came when we found out it was €46!! You can get a hotel room for €46! We should have left there and then as we have never paid more than €26 for a campsite in France, but we decided to bite the bullet and enjoy the 'luxury' facilities for one night only. Big mistake.

First, the good points...

The pitch itself was okay, just a bit unkempt and uneven, but fine overall.

There are lots of great facilities for kids including a big swimming pool, pony rides, play area etc. We don't have kids so I don't know if there's an extra charge for the pony rides. I know it €15 to use the adventure park.

There's a restaurant and a pizza take away (we didn't try either so can't comment on the quality)

There's a supermarket which sells fresh bread in the morning, and next door there's a gift shop for the kids to spend all their parents money in.

Now the areas that need improvement....

They charge you €46 and then they want another €3 for internet access! Sacré bleu!

The toilet block was filthy and when we arrived most of the toilets had no toilet paper, and it was just the same in the morning. The toilets are mixed (male & females use the same toilets) which is ok but this is a 5 star resort and I would have expected men and women to have separate toilets at least. I've seen cleaner toilets at a biker's weekend rally so this really needs attention by the owners.

The showers were a real hit and miss. The first shower I tried didn't work at all and while the next one did at least work, it went between either freezing cold or scalding hot water. Not good.

The garbage area is located at the gate of the campsite which is a good 5 - 10 minute trek. This means that unlike most campsites where as soon as people have cooked etc, they take their rubbish straight to the bins (which are usually located quite close by) many people are just leaving their bags of rubbish at their pitch and then taking it all at the same time. This is shocking for such a huge campsite.

There's a bar, with a nice area outside which overlooks the pool and which when we arrived had a queue back to the Channel tunnel but only 1 member of staff serving drinks. Now given that the majority of people in the queue were kids waiting for 'Mocktails' it was quite a long wait.

And even though this is France, the home of fine wines, there is no choice of wines, only 'White Wine' or 'Red Wine'. To be honest this is not usually a problem as the French take great pride in their house wine and so even a glass of the cheap stuff is usually very good... not so here. It was awful and in fact we were wondering if she hadn't picked up a bottle of French vinegar instead. Honestly, you could have dropped in a couple of onions and had them in your salad the next day, it was that bad.

It was also a very noisy site and at midnight people were still sitting outside their tents playing music and talking very loudly. This is a difficult one as you don't want to stop anyone enjoying their holidays but there is usually a cut off period for noise and if there was one here, it certainly wasn't being adhered to or monitored by the staff.

We are at a real loss to understand why this has been given a 5 star rating. When they can't get the basics like cleanliness and loo roll right, then just because it has lots of different activities does not make it 5 star...much more like 3 star.

All in all, this was a real disappointment and we would neither recommend it or return.

Room Tip: Choose another campsite

This site could be good but it has a few bad habits that have been complained about for years(see past reviews) and not addressed. The toilets are smelly and dirty within an hour of being cleaned because there are not enough. The showers are mostly cold unless you step in and out every 4 mins waiting for warm water. The block is always dirty and overused. Very low staff levels mean long waits at the bar, takeaway or restaurant. Pitches are a bit wild. Ponies are lame and have lost shoes.
Good points are; nice pool and good size pitches with shade and activities for kids, to be honest though it is nowhere near 5*. Maybe 3. Not the usual Castel quality but the kids aged 6,14&15 enjoyed it.

We stayed here overnight to break a journey. The reception staff were very helpful and efficient directing us to our pitch in minutes.

The pitch itself was a good size but had a very rough surface with long tufted grass and areas that had clearly had live fires on them. It would have been difficult to put an awning up for children to play in if we were staying longer due to the poor surface.

The pool complex was busy but well layed out but could have done with a lick of paint on the surrounding fence and none of the poolside showers worked.

Walking round the site and the general feeling of dilapidation was increased. The lake looked about as inviting to swim in as pea soup although there were clearly fish in it as there were some busy fishermen on the banks.

The toilet blocks were clean although there was no handwash soap near the basins, a personal bug-bear of mine which meant taking your own when visiting the loos.

The shop was well stocked with fresh bread in the mornings but a major power cut ensured that there was no take away or restaurant option on the night we stayed. Other campers said that there had been constant problems with power throughout the week. Power went of around 5pm and had still not been re-established when we left at 10 the next morning. There were no signs saying what had happened and no explanation from staff.

This site was acceptable for an overnight stop (the power cut not withstanding) but I would not stay for longer unless the general unkempt nature of the whole site was dealt with.

We chose a premium pitch, and were dissapointed. The premiums have a very large fridge/freezer, 6 plastic chairs and table, 2 loungers and a BBQ. All housed in a shed, which very useful, and electric points. All this was great, but the problem was the pitches themselves were probably the worst in the camp site. Not very shaded, smaller than standard pitches, rough surfaces. We think they were positioned here because they were close to all facilities, but the large shaded standard pitches looked much better in quiter areas of the site.

The pool complex was good, except no survellance 2nd week of July, so the young kids were a bit reckless.

The beach/lake was also disappointing. The beach was fairly rough, rutted and had quite a lot of weeds growing through it. The lake was full of green algae, and hardly anyone used either of these facilities. The lake was full of excellent fish, well stocked and perfect for fishing.

Onsite shop was big, well stocked and had everything we could think of. The restaurant had a take-away which was very good value.

Shower/toilet blocks were not too bad, except one day we couldn't shower because the water was just too hot.

Room Tip: Pick a shaded pitch, or one of the ones down the bottom of the site where the grass looked full. We didnt stay in a mobile home, but most of them were in full sun with very little shade and i wouldnt have wanted to stay there in the middle of summer !
