We (my girlfriend and me) started our Sri Lanka journey at Ruuk Village. We stayed there for 5 nights. I can highly recommend doing it like this: Ruuk Village is a nice way to get familiar with Sri Lanka and its people. It's the perfect place for leaving all cares behind and start relaxing.
Even though we didn't do any kiting, we didn't get bored at all. One day we discovered Kalpitiya which is a ten minutes walk away, the other day we walked around the lagoon. One day, we just enjoyed the sun at Ruuk Village. We stayed in one of the big cabanas. Nothing to complain about, was clean, perfect service. Big plus is the outside shower! The food (break fun was really nice. By far the best we have come across during our Sri Lanka journey. The location managers offer a perfect service and speak English fluently. As a summary: Ruuk Village is luxury at its roots.

I was in at this wunderfull place last summer with a group of friends for kiting. The hotel is located direct on the lagoon and it`s a short ride with the boat to the kite spot on the sandbank. With good wind connditions it`s possible to start and ride direct in front of the hotel. Summer sesion is more wind than the winter sesion.
Small and very relaxing place, friendly staff, nice huts.
Book half or full board because there are no restaurants nearby.

Way too overpriced for minimun service.
The small rooms are not nice at all. The big ones were nice (but still overpriced) only there was no fan in the room.
Interior is decorated with ikea furniture - pretty weird for a socalled authentic sri lankan village.
no Electricity - Solar power was no working. In the evening they run a diesel generatior - how eco is that?
There is no beach and you can't swim in the lagoon as it is too shallow - they will bring you to the beach by boat however - for free.
Food was not bad but certainly not special compared to other places. You can't get anything to eat or drink during the day.
You have to pay extra for everything - eg 10 euro rental just for a paddle board?
Kinging/Whalewatching trips are ridiculously expensive
There were no bikes - if we rented one it took them half a day to find ones that were not working.
The place is infested with mosquitos
Dogs barking at night.

The owners live in Switzerland - they created a nice place in an amazing location that however doesn't live up to its expectations. It feels more like a well thought out business plan far from the authentic srilankan ecovillage they promote. Also Kalpitiya is a very poor region so it doesn't help to create such an expensive place near the village as it actually separates tourists from the local population.

We left early and found a way better and cheaper place at the beach, with better food, better service, all extras for free and a nice overall vibe.

Kalpitiya is a really cool place.

Thank you very much for you feedback and your review on Tripadvisor.
First of all, we have not stated anywhere that Ruuk Vilalge is a fully fledged Eco village.
If you had read our home page carefully you would have found out that we are "ECO based" this means, there is a long way ahead of us, untill we can call our self ECO Village.

One very funny remark that you make about the dogs, really made me laugh, you want us to be authentic but you dont want dogs to be barking now and then?

We dont need to be in the middle of the local Village to call our self a village, we employ 8 Locals, and this means our small project uplift 8 Families from the surronding, and we uplift the economy in Kalpitiya too. And for a place with 8 rooms, if this is not being social, I am not sure what social is.

Your comment to say, you didnt have a fan in the room, but in the next sentence to say we are not ECO, is so Paradox that you seem to have difficulties knowing what you really want.

I will not go in to details, surely there seems to be a GAP between your expectations and what we offer. If you had taken time to understand what ruuk Vilalge is aobut, before you came, then you would not have chosen Ruuk Village in the first place.

If you had booked through booking.com, we surely did send you enough information to highlight what we are and what we are NOT.

but we are happy to read few lines of positive feedback.
Thank you and best regards

Ruuk village is technically looked after by a couple of young, rather ambitious young adults. Benefited from the training by the owner in Switzerland (?), one can certainly feel the westernized influence to the service however the local charm remains.

The huts are basic but very comfortable. Each comes with a veranda which is a great place to hang out, in addition to the very friendly 'living room' at the centre of the village. One should always expect mosquito in places like this - easy fix on small holes on the mosquito net and a burning repellent did help. The open shower attached to a coconut tree is extremely nice however a tad too opened in my opinion. Tilting the entrance a tiny bit or adding a couple more fences would easily create a more intimate/ safe shower environment especially to female travelers.

Kalpitiya isn't big and most tuk tuk know their way, if it was not flooded. It was a tiring entrance especially on our first day after several hours of bus ride and in the dark but it is the weather so we just need to learn to live with it. I am sure on clear days it is one entirely different scene but just be prepared if you happen to arrive in the wet season ;)

They arranged a local fishing boat for us for dolphin watching and it was a blast. Oh and the reservation team based outside of the village was very informative and helpful to our enquiries. Very good playlist by the way!

I say, go with an open heart and embrace!

After reading the reviews of Ruuk Village, we were really surprised how it turned out to be in reality. The food is not the best in Sri Lanka, or even Kalpitya. Unless you like to eat the same rice with fish day after day. We actually wonder how people manage to stay there for over a week. For a kite resort, the knowledge of the staff is surprisingly non-existent as well. You better bring your own equipment as the selection is limted and outdated. There is no wind forecast or any advice from the staff on kitesurfing as they seem to have no experience themselves.
The day trips (kite surf island, dolphion watching or snorkeling) are really expensive and they are not flexible. E.g. it is impossible to organise a snorkeling trip on a low wind day as the boat needs to be booked a day in advance.

We arrive late at night and our driver had to beg and shout at them to have some staff from the "resort" come pick us up as the road was flooded. They finally came and helped us carry our luggage through the water and mud. The room is OK, but really not for this price. We stayed a several nicer places for less than half the price.
It was out of season, so the place was really quiet. But even with more people, the ambiance and lack of lighting and music makes it difficult to imagine it as a fun hangout for kitesurfers. There are several better options around the lagoon to stay. I'd suggest to stay at one of those.

Room Tip: Chose a different place to stay

Hello dear guest,
Thank you for you review to help the other travelers a comment right at the beginning.

And it is really a pitty that traverlers does not seem to realize that Ruuk Village is UNIQUE.
It is not in the middle of a crowded village, we are a off the grid project and this is one of the reasons why the guests book Ruuk Village and appreciate it.

In case you don't like Rice and curry you should avoid Ruuk Village too.

All in all you were consulted with more than 15 Emails and we had clearly informed you that you are coming during the off season for kitesurfing. We had clearly stated in our mails that the Kite-school and therefore the kite teachers / assistants are going to be available after the 15.12.2015.

If you had mentioned that you needed onsite support for kiting we could have made earlier arrangements, but if you thought that Ruuk Village local team members are experts in Kiting, then this shows that you did not take time to read all the information that we shared with your before hand.

And at last minute you said you can not afford to pay for the EnSuite and we even offered you the EnSuite for the standard price.

We execute the snorkeling and dolphin tours with external partners and these external partners need to be informed latest at dinner time for the next day. Theoretically this works well, if you check the weather forecast and inform the team accordingly.

Ruuk Village is not a party location, and we have clearly state this in our communication too, if you were looking for a party location, then you should have not chosen Ruuk Village in the first place.

And in regard to Ruuk Village does not offer Meat ( Cow or goat ), in case you are looking for meat for you meals, you should avoid Ruuk Village too.

And in regard to Transport to the village, rain and streets getting flooded is not in the control of Ruuk Village management or the team onsite. But as you have mentioned, the team has still made sure you reached the village even though the street was flooded. And instead of appreciating it you seems to be complaining about it.

All in all, next time you choose a place to stay, do try to inform your self better.
Traveling is the only thing which makes a person rich.
Best regards
