Rosebank Cafe and Grill
Ranked #5 of 5 Quick Bites in Balclutha
Cuisines: Diner
Description: One of the great things about touring in New Zealand is the great quality of the breakfasts. Fresh eggs, well-cooked bacon, good coffee etc.The Highway Diner in Balclutha is the exception that proves the rule. The array of deep fried foods under the glass counter is impressive; they may even be good. But bacon and eggs was a disaster. Eggs over-cooked; bacon watery, toast from wafer thin bread, coffee very poor. A great pity.

The Diner is a good place to stop when you dont want to wait long or go to a bigger shop and the selection of takeaways is reasonable. The prices have gone up over the last couple of years though and isnt as cheap as it once was. Customer Service is average at best and the also of the staff come across quite rough which can be offputting. But still its ok if you want takeaways in a hurry or a sitdown meal.

A good place to take children. Lots of chips and yummy milkshakes. Clean toilets. Free instant coffee or tea with a meal. Typical food: chips chicken hot dogs sandwiches cake. Don't expect anything fancy. The staff are friendly.

On the way South recently I decided to stop at the Highway Diner for a cup of coffee and a snack. I wasn't expecting too much but I got more that I expected or wanted.
I ordered a Mochachino and bought a packaged muffin (i.e sourced from a provider rather than baked on the premises). The lady serving me and my colleague offered us plates for our muffins. I handed one to my colleague and then looked at mine when I noticed that it still had crumbs on it from a previous user. Oooops! So much for washing the dishes. It must have looked clean enough and was put back in the pile at the counter. That plate got returned. There was no offer to heat the muffins so I went to select a knife out of the tray of utensils at the front of the counter. The first one I picked up still had congealed remnants attached and it was difficult to find one that actually looked well washed. The packaged muffin was quite good and the coffee was satisfactory but this establishment needs to have a good look at what it is providing. I would not be stopping there in future unless I was fairly desperate. Final straw was that as I was leaving I went to the men's toilet but when I went to wash my hands I discovered the soap dispenser was empty. Attention to vital details seems to be amiss at this place.

Avoid at all costs! Believe me when I say it's best to stay hungry and wait till you get to Dunedin or Gore. A grease pit, tasteless food even your dog would baulk at, and juveniles manning the kitchen.

We ordered a thick shake and two toasted sandwiches. The orders were completely wrong the food undercooked. The cheese that saturated the bread was scrapped off and I got the same sandwich back with traces of onion still on it. Very disappointing as we weekly commute between Dunedin and Invercargill. The thick shake was like water. The person behind the counter appeared disinterested she gave an apology as a matter of course.
