Owner description: Half-mile hiking trail through scenic areas.
Reviewed 19 March 2018

The Gumbo Limbo Trail is off the Royal Palm visitors center near the entrance to the
Everglades National Park. It is a loop of less than 1/2 mile through an historic “hammock” of hardwood trees & dense growth - including the large red bark Gumbo Limbo trees. Unfortunately many of the large trees were downed by storms & the area lost it’s canopy.

We learned a lot reading the signs on this informative short trail. It was easy to hike, paved and flat. I recommend reading the signs.

The Gumbo Limbo trail is adjacent to the Royal Palm Visitor Center and the Anhinga Trail. The entrance to the trail is right at the beginning of the Anhinga Trail walkway. This paved walkway wanders through a dense area of trees, so you get the feeling of walking through a forest with the sun shining through the trees. It's beautiful, pleasant, quiet. There are informational placards along the way, explaining the various types of plant life you are seeing. It's an easy walk with no steep embankments. It's a short walk, just a few tenths of a mile. It's a very good counterpoint to the Anhinga Trail, forested trail versus waterway trail. You see completely different things on the two. The only negative thing about it is the mosquitoes. It's the Everglades, and the mosquitoes will be there. You're in their territory. Cover yourself in bug repellent. Wear netting over your face if you plan to spend a long time there. Expect buzzing and biting. As long as you know what to expect, you will enjoy the beauty of this short trail.

Really nice trail in authentic old Florida. Really scary at night, it's so dark but fun as long as you have a flashlight.
