We were told that the road to Bowman was closed due to the parking lot being full. We decided to go for it anyway and at least drive through to see the lake since we'd come so far. The gravel road was very narrow and quite lumpy, but we had 4-wheel drive. When we got up there, we found parking available without any trouble. We swam and enjoyed the scenery and even had a buck walk right through the beach near us. This was the only time we needed bug spray in our trip to Glacier--for biting flies. Not major, but a nuisance & worth spray. This was a quieter destination than most, and we appreciated the relative solitude.

The parking lot is tiny and they were turning cars away all day. We happened to get a spot. The road was 6 miles of horrible potholes. We probably wouldn't have gone had we known how bad the road was. Once there though, going out on the lake with the kayaks was amazing.

Believe it or not, we were unable to get to Bowman Lake because the parking lot was congested. This is a somewhat remote lake northeast of Polebridge, MT, in Glacier Park. We went on a Thursday, and after driving for over an hour on rough, unpaved roads, we were just 5 miles away when the Park Ranger told us we had to go somewhere else. What a disappointment. I have been there before, and it is a beautiful lake that is visited by only a few people. What was up this particular Thursday ????

I've been on rough roads and to us this wasn't really bad but it wasn't that good either. It's a slow go for sure. I'd go up early because you have less people that are coming down and the road is narrow. Be sure to take Mosquito repellent! The lake is beautiful and it's so quiet and peaceful.

Our first day at Glacier, we did a half-day morning whitewater rafting trip. Lake Bowman fit in perfectly for our afternoon itinerary. At the first four-way stop when you enter the West Glacier entrance, turn left to Polebridge. At Polebridge, have a beer and lunch at the historic saloon, then try the huckleberry bear claws and macaroons at the mercantile. You can also purchase fresh huckleberries right next door. Continue down the the unpaved road in front of the mercantile until you reenter the park. You will have another unpaved and rough road (our rental was completely covered in dirt) for 25-30 minutes before you reach the lake. It's gorgeous! The trails go around the lake and are flat and easy. It's bear country, so don't hike alone and clap/yell as you walk. Better yet - keep your bear spray handy.
