Owner description: The highest peak in the park.

We drove up the road about 7 miles of of awesome views. There area a few places to
pull off and look out. GO EARLY to avoid the traffic and get a place to park in the lot.
We were there in October early in the morning. No problem with traffic or crowds.
We are seniors and we had to stop at each of the 4 benches to rest but we made it
to the top. We stepped onto the Appalachian trail and had our picture by the sign.
The tower was closed. The top of the mountain is covered with trees. The best
views are on the way up. Parking lot was full when we got back. Closed until spring.

If you a hiker, getting to Clingmans Dome will be a piece of cake. It gets very crowded as everyone and their grandma feels that if they manage to push themselves up the paved hill; they have actually hiked in the Smokies!! Apologies for the sarcasm but I got very annoyed with this one. Views are great but to be honest you can get the same views in other less crowded hikes. This is a tourist "hike" so personally, I would miss it. There are much better places to see in the Smokies.

Yes, after many years, the top observation area needs rebuilding, so you can't get the absolutely best panoramic views yet. The views you do get, the rocks and trees you come close to, the walk in the fresh mountain air are still great and reason enough to take the hike from the parking lot. The drive in on the road to the parking lot gives you miles of less travelled road with good vistas too.

Clingman's Dome is about 7 miles off the main road. And once you get there there's a half a mile hike up to the spiral winding observation point, where you'll get breathtaking views of the park. It is well worth the hike, but be advised this isn't for the short-winded person. There are resting spots every 1/10 mile, but it still takes a bit of endurance. You will need to wear some comfortable shoes as it is a very steep climb up the trail.

It was a fun, slightly challenging hike (some were out of breath at the top), the sunset views were amazing. A must see!
