“Great Trail - need way to shuttle”
Review of Boy Scout Trail

Boy Scout Trail

Hiked the north eastern 3 miles of this trail. Great trail to transition from open desert to the rocks. It would be great if there's a way to shuttle this hike using the park service provided transit.

I really struggled with my rating, and tough to decide on a 4 vs. 5! A great hike, but in my opinion, there are prettier areas in the Park. Some pretty rock formations along the way, but not jaw-dropping like some other areas, hence my 4 rating. The Boy Scout Trail is not a loop trail. One end of the trail is deep in the park, well marked by a sign on Park Blvd., with a good-sized parking area and pit toilet. Elevation at this trailhead is about 4100'. The trail ends (or starts, depending upon where you choose to begin your hike) at a small turnoff on Indian Cove Rd. Here the elevation is around 2500'. Option 1 (which is what we did) is to start at the trailhead off Park Blvd and hike the mostly flat and downhill 8 mile trail, have a car parked at the end of the trail in Indian Cove, and then drive back to pick up your car later. This is what most people choose to do, unless you are wanting a more vigorous workout with a significant elevation climb (Option 2), in which case you would start your hike at the Indian Cove trailhead. The trail was easy to follow and well marked with signs and arrows along the way. I never felt lost or had to backtrack to find the trail. About a mile or so in (if you start from the Park Blvd. trailhead) you will see the Willow Hole Trail (Option 3). The Willow Hole Trail is a totally distinct hike to a different location, so not to be confused with the Boy Scout Trail hike. After about 3-4 miles of mostly flat hiking through Joshua trees, the trail starts a steeper descent and more time is spent hiking in washes. The last mile or two is spent almost exclusively in a wash, at one point becoming narrow with steep side walls. Beautiful!! Overall, an excellent desert hike and I recommend it.

A wonderful and easy trail. Especially if you deviate and take the path leading to the wonderland of rocks. Made me feel like Lara Croft exploring some desert! The area allows for some excellent backcountry camping as well.

I did the hike from the south end at Keys West and
ended at the Indian Cove was north trail head. The weather was cool and windy in exposed areas.
I enjoyed the southern sector better where it was more scenic with Joshua Trees and other plants. The northern sector consisted of hiking down into a ravine and walking through a wash. It was less scenic and more demanding mentally so as not to miss step and fall on the granite steps and rocks. It was a quiet hike, I encountered nine people the whole hike which lasted 3 hours. I stopped to take videos and photos but only carried a day pack with sweater, apples, snack bars and water in addition to my first aid kit
Joshua Tree is such a huge park that I would do a different hike every time I visited.
