When the lake is frozen you get to experience this area in a totally different way, and it is breathtaking. We had some family visiting from Texas and it was the first time they had the experience of walking out on a frozen lake. The walk around the lake gets a little tricky, but you can walk across to anywhere you want - and make a snowman along the way. There are plenty of great trails that are pretty easy from this area too that you can hike or snowshoe (our favorites are Alberta Falls and Dream Lake). Winter, Fall, Spring or Summer this is a beautiful place to be.

Gem! Wide path for a family, and circuit style trail for easy exercise. Beautiful views, especially around sunset.

Anyone can get to the lake from the parking lot. It's worth hiking past the lake for anyone who is able. It is always an awe inspiring adventure.

We stopped off at Bear Lake and skimmed stones across the frozen surface
It was very cold and extremely windy so we didn't stay long

Bear Lake is easily accessible from the Bear Lake trailhead. There is a 0.5 mi/0.8 km loop trail around the lake.

We hiked part of the loop trail (eastern shore) on our way to Flattop Mountain, Hallett Peak, and Bierstadt Lake. It was 9:30am on the Saturday of the Labour Day weekend, and there were so many people doing the loop trail that we couldn't wait to get on the Flattop Mountain trail. Although the lake is beautiful with crystal clear water and perfect mirror reflections, it's not as spectacular and serene as the other alpine lakes in the park (Lake Haiyaha, Mills Lake, the Loch, Lake of Glass, Sky Pond). It was also just too crowded.
