“Super Easy Hike, Wonderful Photo Ops”

Lily Lake Trailhead
Reviewed 2 April 2018

A fabulous walk around a beautiful mountain lake that just about anybody can do. We stop several times to get pictures of the awesome views. It's also a great warm-up for getting a little more acclimated to the altitude before heading to something more.

This is a nice walking path around the lake. They also had had paths farther behind that we did last time we visited and one that went up higher that we did not go on this visit.

The .9 mile trail around Lily Lake is ADA, and mostly flat. It is an easy hike alternative, and is wheelchair accessible. As with the other trails in RMNP, pets are not allowed on the trails.

Another trail, The Lily Ridge Trail, is more difficult, but has better views of Long's Peak. It is not ADA, and required scrabbling up (or down) some boulders near the lake.

There is a small parking lot, picnic tables, pit toilets, benches along the trail, and a wooden fishing pier at the trail head. Bring a picnic lunch and enjoy a nice day. If not, wear walking shoes (no flip flops or high heels), a hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, and bring water.

Staying at Taharaa, this hike was only five minutes from our lodge, which was nice. There is a small lot right by the lake and then a larger lot across the street if needed; vault toilets are located in the parking area. The hike around the lake itself is more of a level walk; you can get great views of Longs Peak and other mountains as well. I would highly recommend adding on at least a portion of the short Lily Ridge Trail. You access it from the far side of the lake trail and you gain maybe 100 ft of elevation, so it isn't too bad. But you can get amazing views of the peaks and the lake itself from this higher vantage point.

We took this hike after a day of moderate hikes (sometimes in snow) and it was a relaxing way to end our day. On the southeaster part of RMNP and right off the road. Mostly sunny hard-packed trail, great for older people who want to take in the beauty of the park in a safe hike. Saw lots of duck and golden eyes and a couple of busy muskrats going back and forth to their burrow.
