“Beautiful short, easy hike”

Mary's Rock Summit Trail
Reviewed 14 January 2018 via mobile

This is a nice class 1 trail (easy). Ample parking at trailhead and a fairly busy route. No water available at any point except trailhead.

This route is an out and back that can be extended easily by turning off onto the Appalachian Trail.

No cell signal except at summit.

Great trail for scouts or families.

Camping prohibited near summit, there are signs to let you know at what points you should not camp.

Lovely trail.

Combine this with a trip to the Dukes of Hazzard shop run by Cooter if you are coming for a day trip from DC! Ample restaurants in the nearby cities to make this a very nice day outing.

Okay, this trail isn’t for just anyone. It’s a steep hike up that gives you no break. We would ask hikers coming down, “how much further?”. No matter where in the hike we were we kept hearing “about an hour”. But when you make it to the top, you forget all about the strenuous hike up and are just amazed at the beauty. We stayed there a good hour and enjoyed the 360 degree views. AMAZING!

So yes, the hike up was on the high end of “moderate” but it was great. Lots to see, and a really great path. This is so far my favorite hike in Shenandoah. After this hike, we bought an annual pass to SNP to explore other hikes. Next up, Hawksbill!!

We wanted to make a day of it and weren’t sure of our capabilities. Instead of the most direct route to Mary’s trail, we parked near jewel where there was an actual parking lot. Made our way about 50 yd north into the AT entrance. That trail eventually leads to a couple of options, one being Mary’s Rock Summit Trail. We went the long way in and it was definitely more scenic that the direct entrance to Mary’s Rock. The actual summit was spectacular and although we met an awesome couple, there were more people at the top than expected and I wish we had had more time to hang out at the top. Plenty of room to share but it would have been a perfect opportunity for a snack and honestly we were super hungry haha! Snagged some cool pictures of feet dangling off a mountain. Enjoyed the view and people watching as they found daring places to sit or stand. Plenty of dogs made the hike and also a very young baby! Absolutely beautiful trail and summit, had made hikers out of us and cannot wait to visit the next trail!

This trail is moderate to strenous and straight up.  The trail itself is very nice and shaded.  There are some nice views along the way and the summit is cool look out. It is a rocky trail so your feet might hurt some.

The hike is quite challenging as the terrain is rough and extremely steep. It is straight up and straight back down. It is not necessarily a pretty Trail to hike however the view from the top is outstanding. We packed a lunch and ate at the top.
