“It just gets better every time we stay!”
Reviewed 15 August 2015 for a stay in August 2015

Another amazing week in this beautiful gite! Andre's wife (caretaker / manger of the property) welcomed us and shared the new updates following our visit last year.
New sun loungers, new comfy chairs for four adults, large flat screen TV and best addition was the new washing machine!
The property was bliss - everything you could need on a practical holiday to entertain, relax and enjoy the peace, quiet and privacy this gite offers.
The gite sleeps 6 comfortably with ample space in the property to spread out and enjoy quiet corners to read a book...or two...or three! We thoroughly enjoyed the sun drenched garden during the day with shaded areas to escape to when it became too hot.
The gite remains cool due to the beautifully tiled floor and window shutters - escaping the heat was necessary on a number of occasions due to the soaring temperatures! Lovely, lovely sunshine!
So much to do from this gite - there are fabulous walks through the woods, walks to Chateau La Loirie (2km from Gite) which our girls loved the building and fountains whilst looping back through the chateau's grounds and returning along a peaceful lane. There is a superb walk into Segre along the river Oudon from the village which is full of wildlife - we saw kingfishers galore, frogs the size of your fist splashing into the water making us jump every other step! Amazing to have this on your doorstep. However, the close proximity to the Mayenne river opens up yet more opportunities for family activities. One of our daughters has just turned 6, and enjoyed the flat, traffic-less trail which runs alongside the river for miles and miles! We parked at the Anjou Sports nature base at La Jaille Yvon and cycled (brought our own bikes) to Lion de Angers down the river stopping in a fabulous play park for the girls right behind the Race Track for a picnic. We managed to also catch the last of their horse races whilst enjoying a well deserved rest. On this trip we saw a 1.5m grass snake basking in the sun on the river lily pads, river jelly-fish, herons, fish, kingfishers, red squirrels and our best treat was an otter sat on the cycle path watching us! The cycle route is free and both our daughters loved the close proximity to such wild-life...'Awesome' (8year old's comment). On this day we cycled 28km but due to ease of the trails it flies by. We also went out a second day, travelling north, up the river from the same location through Daon (lovely child friendly play area over the bridge...great little restaurant also), past Menil (good stop off for ice-cream!) onto Chateau Gontier! The trails are so well kept and cycling is so easy on this flat surface our daughters devoured the miles - 34km on second cycle! Pack lots of water though as we got through 6litres! Great free day trips out (cycle hire from Anjou Sports is available as are free maps for the routes).
We also hired an electric boat from Chateau Gontier (near the campsite in front of the indoor/ outdoor swimming pool) to view the river from another angle - great experience and well worth the £20 euros!
During the week Andre and his wife invited us for Aperitifs which was a great way to practice our French alongside gaining local information about markets, swimming pools and attractions (Le Mine Bleu). They were fabulous hosts, providing a guided tour of the local fire station for our girls and a trip to the park with their grand children ( both our daughters ages enabling French and English to be rehearsed!).
Yet again, this gite has supplied us with an affordable family holiday in private, spacious surroundings - thank you Francois Mace!

“A good time was had by all.”
Reviewed 25 September 2014 for a stay in September 2014

My husband and I took a chance on booking this house on tripadvisor.ie. There were no reviews as this was a new property on the site. We were not disappointed, in fact we were very happy with our choice. We have stayed in self-catering accommodation in several parts of France and this was, by far, the best. We arrived a little late on a Thursday evening as we were held up by roadworks. Francois, the owner rang to make sure that we could find our way. (He also rang again to ensure that we had arrived and that everything was to our satisfaction.) When we arrived at our destination we received a very cheerful welcome from André's (the caretaker) wife. We were shown around a spacious, well equipped property and given instructions on how to work everything including the oven (not all holiday accommodation contain an oven). The house was very clean. A bottle of a local white wine was left for our enjoyment. We found the local information, provided for us by Francois in advance, very helpful. André and his wife visited us on Sunday to ensure that we had settled in and that everything was ok. We stayed for 12 nights in total, our two young adult daughters joining us for 4. They loved the house and area and did not want to leave. My daughters both love little wild creatures and took great delight in watching the antics of the lizards, the red squirrels and the beetles.
This house is not overlooked and is very private. While it is in a quiet area, it is close to all we needed for our stay. La Chapelle sur Oudon is an enchanting village. It is a wonderful place to wander around. The river bank is beautiful and so peaceful and we visited it many times. The Wednesday morning market in Segré was a pleasure to visit and it, as well as the local supermarkets, offered plenty of choice for all our grocery needs. Segré is a lovely town. The highlight of our holiday was attending the "Tout au Fer" festival on the weekend before our departure. It was magic. The whole town became one large flea market. There were artists painting pictures in several locations around the town. Crafts were on display. There was music and dancing. Sausages and chips and crepes and wine were available to buy and be consumed in the open air. It was just one large happy party.
While we visited several of the local attractions we also found that the house is well placed for making day trips to places further afield. We visited Saumur to see the Tank museum, Tours as well as Chateau du Clos Lucé in Amboise. This is the last home of Leonardo da Vinci and well worth a visit.
From start to finish our stay was very enjoyable. We would highly recommend this house to anybody who enjoys a bit of privacy as well as some sightseeing and some shopping. We are four adults but I would not hesitate to take young children here as well.

“Garden House is Fantastic - Relaxation is nothing short of mandatory!”

What a treat! We stumbled upon this gite to extend our family holiday on our return from the Gironde. It was everything and more than we expected...Garden House is a wonderfully spacious, well equipped gite with everything you would need for a simple relaxed family holiday. Situated 4km outside of Segre in a very quiet village, the gite could be overlooked as it sits behind a large, well maintained hedge, giving the property almost total privacy yet allowing the sunshine to bathe you throughout the day! The gite is nestled in amongst large mature trees with its own sweeping driveway, gardens and patio furniture. The grounds are very private and secure (loved this aspect as our girls were able to roam freely within the large gardens both front and back...munching on the ripe pears and apples found in the orchard area to the rear of the property!). The gite itself was very clean, tidy and practical for all our family needs and the holiday got off to a great start with the helpful and detailed 'arrival welcome' from Andre and his wife...the bottle of locally produced wine certainly was appreciated!
Our host (owner Francois Mace) and the welcome we received from Andre and his wife was exceptional, we had a phone call to check the property was okay and we had everything we needed, whilst Andre popped in after a day or so just to ensure we'd found everything and settled in okay...we also got invited on a boat trip to Chateau Gontier! So lovely and helpful.
It is a great location...the close proximity to walks and cycles directly from your doorstep enabled us to have a great family week - walking into Segre along the river (18 brightly coloured kingfishers spotted one day!)for a long French lunch, cycling to the nearby Chateau, walking along the forest track and into the Marie's garden/ viewing point and relaxing around the gite - sheer bliss.
Excited!!! We also visited Chambellay, 10 minute drive from the gite, a small village situated on the Mayenne river which at first glance doesn't appear that special...however, alongside the river is an amazing footpath which takes you all the way to Chateau Gontier (if you were feeling adventurous...then onto Laval!!) - we walked and cycled the path on a couple of days as the scenery was so spectacular and the path was so practical - wide enough to fit two cyclists side by side and our little 5yr old, still on her bike with stabilisers completed 21km one day as there were so many wildlife treats to for them to observe...also Menil has a great little park and ice-cream parlour (serves meals and ice cold beers!).
There is plenty to do within the locality of this gite which makes it such a great base to tour from but also after a day out visiting Chateau's and the like, it felt really good to come home to!
We will certainly be bookmarking this gite for future holidays as we have only just discovered a small part of what this region has to offer - absolutely brilliant holiday!
