I ended up in Dos Mares because unfortunately I didn't do proper research about Varadero's casa particular options. However, this hotel turned out to be okay, although I didn't expect much based on the reviews. It is a budget hotel and would really need some face lift, but the room was adequate.

The things that bothered me a bit were that you cannot lock the door from inside (mainly for a peace of mind, the room is accessible only with a key), the bathroom door is swollen probably because of humidity so you cannot close it properly, and it takes forever to dry your swim wears and towels because there is no balcony. There is a safety box in the room, though they charge 2CUC/night for it. Also bring earplugs, on some nights they play loud music in the bar.

The toilet didn't flush at first because the mechanism was broken, but the staff had fixed it by the time I got back. The staff is nice and the breakfast is okay, about the same what you would get in a casa particular, though the casa version is probably way better (at least in the casa where I stayed in Havana).

The hotel is one hundred meters from the beach, and about 15-20 minute walk from Viazul bus station. I highly recommend that you check the casa options for a better experience, but if you end up in Dos Mares anyway, in my opinion it is not as bad as the worst reviews say.

We booked a casa particular for four nights which ended up being a nightmare so after the first night we ended up in this hotel for three remaining nights. I'd call it OK for sleep-over. Don't expect too much but it was sufficient for us. The rooms were spacious, everything was clean and that was all we wanted. Sure you'll do better in a good casa but everything was occupied at the time. Breakfast was not the best ever but than again it was OK for us. The best thing regarding this hotel is the proximity of a great beach. You won't get much sleep because the traffic and clubs are loud but then OK. We didn't mind. A couple of tips - eat at Dos Mares buffet on your left on the way to the beach - it doesn't look much but ask for Franco the cook and the daily recommendation. It was one of the best meals in Cuba. The lifeguards on the beach are friendly and will hook you up with drinks.

Room tip: Try to avoid the rooms overlooking the avenue and the kitchen.

Varadero can be a souless place along the 15 kms hotel strip outside of the town. Oh the beach is beautiful and people can be happy with a respite from winter but this is tourist Cuba. Hotel Dos Mares in in the town itself and there is lots of shopping and restaurants just a stroll away. It is frequented by Cuban nationals and by European travellers so has an authentic, intelligent vibe. The servive is good with English spoken if needed and the place is just 50 metres from the beach Calle Playa.

A basic hotel, that could need some TLC, but only 1 min. to the nice beach and close to everything. Liked the fact that it was away from all the big hotels and more quiet on the beach. Breakfast was average.
