We spent a week at NH Royal Beach (3/27-4/3) with a group of friends. We very much enjoyed the stay and have no real complaints, to speak of. The only disappointment was the food available in the restaurants. Very limited selection and slow service. After a few attempts, we decided that the buffet was the best way to go. The food in the buffet is excellent and there is a large variety. My husband and I have been to several all-inclusive restaurants and really enjoyed this resort, based on the price we paid (999.00 per person with non-stop air). Had we paid top dollar, we would have been overall disappointed due to the food. We typically stay at the Secrets Resorts but thought to give this a try, as well. The property itself is beautiful. The beach is gorgeous and the palm trees make the difference. The drinks at the resort were very good but it took a bit of effort to get premium liquor. Once the tips started flowing, the premium brands were flowing, as well. We did one excursion, Marinarium, which includes snorkeling with sharks and stingrays. It was well worth the price. We were very lucky....we had the best weather. 90 degrees every day without a cloud in the sky. This was our first trip to the Dominican and I would return again.

In short...the rooms were very nice, the service was great and the pool and grounds were beautiful. The beach was also beautiful with all the palm trees, white sand and palapas. However, the thing that might keep me from returning was the seaweed in the ocean and on the beach. They did clean it up on the beach but couldn't keep up with it. There was nothing you could do about it in the water except swim with it. We were wondering if it is like this all of the time or it is seasonal or remants from a storm. The Royal side of the 2 resorts is much quiter and not much going on at night so it was good to be able to go next door to the Real. I also think they could improve on the entertainment at night.

We were a little scared to go to this hotel because of some of the reviews we read. We have three suggestions for the hotel management: soap dishes for the bathrooms, more hooks in the bathrooms, and a little more lighting overall.

We have a suggestion to those who complained about the beach chairs being reserved - the hotel PUTS the towels on the chairs for you. They are not all reserved. Go to your travel agencies orientation. Ask questions. Thank everyone there - the staff is SO courteous and we have absolutely no complaints. We couldn't have asked for more. WE WILL GO BACK! Happier in Punta Cana than in Cincinnati!!

Pros

It is very close to the airport.

The staff is fantastic!!!

The beach is beautiful, a powdery white, no rocks.

The rooms are beautiful with a large bathroom.

They leave a very generous amount of body cream, shampoo, conditioner and hair gel in the bathroom every night.

The bed and pillows very good. I slept like a baby.

There is room service.

The bar that is on the sandy beach is quiet and low key. However the bartender had a sour face and was slowwwwwww.

There are waiters roaming the beach and they will bring you beverages if you want.

The buffet has lots of variety and everything was fresh. It has a patio that overlooks the water.

On the beach here are 4 platforms with mattresses under them and on top of them. You must rent them for the day $80.00 US. They come with waiter service, a quick 5 minute massage, cold drinks, fruit and cold towels. In an all inclusive this seems odd but there were people that forked it over. For $40.00 US you can just rent the hut no food or drink brought to you. So if you don't want to wake up at dawn consider this.

Cons

Men must wear long pants to evening dinners even in the Royal buffet. However the Festival buffet in the Arena side allows you to wear whatever you want.

There seemed to be a lot of 18 year olds. We probably should have gone to a couples only resort.

No quiet area to lounge in. The beach is quiet till the party boats pass by the beachfront and start blasting music or the small aircraft that circle overhead all day buzz the area. The pool area has the throbbing party music from mid morning till evening.

A huge complaint I have is that the toilet is a 5 minute walk from the beach. You have to pass the pool bar then meander around the pool and walk over a bridge. There is restroom with one stall behind the dive shack but it is frequently occupied for long periods of time and gets really filthy. My husband says the mens room is rancid and he would not use it.

Things that should changed

Wifi is sporatic. If I am paying then it should be available when I need it.
Early birds get the tiki huts. By 6am there are just a couple of huts left. Come on guys you have the to room build more so just do it .
The towel shack for the royal club opens at 9am so pick up fresh towels for the next morning before you go back to the room in the afternoon. The towel shack for the Arena side opens at 8am. Why the difference?
The gym was very small and hot.

Tips

If you like to drink lots of coffee you will be happier if you bring a coffee tumbler and use it in the morning.

The chaise lounges are hard. But lots of people bring the blowup mattresses and place them under their towels. It seems to make the chaises bearable.

There are a few canvas beanbag lounges and they are the best. snag them if you can.

Reservations we had at restaurants

We ate at the mexican restaurant which was fine. The buffet appetizer stand at this restaurant was where you find the mexican food. It has a patio you can eat on that overlooks the water.

The restaurant Senses is a total waste of time. The service was abysmal. The food was tasteless.

The Italian restaurant had a nice antipasta, arugala salad and pasta (you can have the pasta as a main dish). The main course was truely lacking.

Overall very nice 7 days at NH Adult side. Found reviews to be very accurate. Be aware of the $10.00 USD per person airport tax when arriving at the airport. Took a $30.00 cab from the airport and a $33.00 ride back. Wouldn't worry about arranging a ride before-hand, just find the taxi stand with the pink shirt guys. Brought 100 one dollar bills, used about 50 for tipping dinner waiters, housekeeping, bar tenders. You can use $$ USD everywhere and I would not recommend changing any money what so ever. ATMs hard to find , bring cash and a credit card, use safe in rooms. Only one complaint: There were NOT enough beach chairs to accomodate the crowd. People would rise as early as 4 am to go put towels on chairs. (Not my idea of a vacation) We were down to the beach by 9 or 10 and always had to scrounge for chairs or ask the helpers to get us some. It was a bit frustrating. The beach is beautiful with powdered sugar white sand and water with streaks of turquoise, deep blue and green. You can take great long walks with a never ending stretch of beach in both directions. We did the "James Bond" excursion through the concierge and it was very fun...two person speedboat out to a roped off section for snorkeling, changed into gear and snorkeled. A lot of fish and some decent brain and fan corals. Not crowded, very enjoyable. Buffet on adults side was very good along with the outdoor barbeque asado on the families' side for lunch. Don't waste time in the restaurants other than the Asian one. Try the Mono sucio/Dirty Monkey drink at the swim up bar...delicious! The bar tenders will make you any drink in a coconut or a pineapple. I enjoyed watching them handle the task by preparing the pinapple and coconut with a 2 foot machete. Nice crowds of people, all ages, many different languages all enjoying the resort. Nice rooms, great bathrooms! We did bring a laptop and paid 60 USD to have wireless for the week. Very fun and relaxing trip!
