My husband and I went to Secrets St. James with 2 other couples to celebrate our 50th birthdays. We were greeted by warm check in staff who welcomed us with a scented, cool towel and a delicious glass of rum punch. Only 1 of our 3 rooms was ready, as we arrived before check in time, so we put all bags in that one room and headed out to explore the resort. We started with lunch and drinks at the pool bar restaurant. Our server was so nice and the food was very good. We spent the rest of the afternoon hanging on the beach until we were able to get into the rest of the rooms.

The rooms, junior ocean-view suites were lovely. They were clean and well appointed and we had an amazing view of the St. James pool and the ocean. The soaking tub was calling my name and the dual shower head (one regular and one rain) made for a super-relaxing shower.

The resort has a nice selection of restaurants and bars. The restaurants are themed by cuisine, and I think the French was the most delicious of all (although we didn't get to try the Italian as it was closed the night we were going to go - that was a disappointment). The French restaurant had a wonderful goat cheese cake appetizer that I could eat every day, and the lamb chops were cooked very nicely. One of our other favorites was the jerk chicken cart. It was a delicious lunch option and a nice surprise to find it outside of desires after a night out. We also loved the chips at the Barefoot Grill - made fresh and super yummy.

The drinks are well made and the bartenders are pleasantly heavy-handed. There are several, so drinks are never too far away. We did find that the beach servers were not as attentive as we'd like, but having to walk the 20 steps to the Marlin bar gave us a chance to burn a couple of calories. The bartenders were very friendly and we loved talking to them about life in Jamaica. We had an especially great conversation with Ricardo at the Oceana restaurant bar.

A couple of things that we found a little frustrating...we love to snorkel, but didn't pack our gear, assuming that the resort would have some we could borrow. It turns out that you can only use theirs if you are on an organized snorkel trip. I think this is done purposefully so that you go to the gift shop and buy the ones there for $30 US each. I've never heard of an all inclusive island resort that didn't let guests use that equipment when ever they wanted to. Also, housekeeping was a bit inconsistent. We were very diligent about turning out our privacy light, but some nights we had turn down service and some nights we didn't. It doesn't really bother us, but it would have been nice to know what should have been done. I also saw pictures from other travelers who had towel folding done in their rooms and that was not done for us, so not sure how you get that service. We never did get our robes - they weren't in the room and we didn't know that we had to request them (we did finally request them but didn't get them, still), but we did have some nice slippers waiting for us in the room.

All in all, it was an excellent resort. We were spoiled by the staff and the beach was beautiful. I would highly recommend this resort for well-deserved couple time!!

Room Tip: They are doing some roof work on the St. James building and it was right over our friend's rooms. I would ask about that when booking.

I usually go to a sandals resort but decided to check out Secrets. Very average as a whole. Great location and beach, good food and service. The bar and bartenders were bad, impolite service, bottom shelf liquor, and weak drinks. The rooms also need updating. For average money I got an average vacation, better off to pay more and get what you want.

We just returned from a week at Secrets and we couldn’t be happier with our trip. The resort is beautifully maintained. The rooms were clean and up to date. All of the restaurants we ate at were wonderful. The best part of our trip had to be the poolside bar and entertainment staff! LEO went above and beyond to fulfill our needs! We had a large group that definitely drank our fair share and LEO was always right there with a funny joke and tray full of beverages....

This is a great resort with a super beach on some spectacular (and warm for March) Caribbean waters...the pools are very nice (St James preferred is heated)...the rooms could use some upgrading but the service is tremendous and the choice and quality of food is pretty good...the lunchtime Jerk carts are awesome!...nightly entertainment is a nice bonus...

Room Tip: Oceanviews are very nice

Traveled with my wife for a weeks rest and relaxation and the hotel met all our needs. We enjoyed all the restaurants with the French being our favorite...Duane the waiter was fantastic here and you need to clone him!
The quality of the food was first class, my only complaint would be not one of our meals was hot they were always warm at best.
Our check in was fine but please, why try to leap on a guest who has just flown 10 hours and just wants to get to their room, a firm no we are not interested in paying $0000's to join your exclusive club did the trick.
Room was spotless and we loved the bed, we slept fantastic. If you think St James and Wild Orchid are 2 hotels, think again, there share every facility and restaurants, they just have a separate lobby for check in...not sure why they sell them as different hotels?
The pool area and bars were great, especially the heated one at St James with the swim up bar, it did get quite crowded and I wish I had a volume control to turn down the volume of our friends across the Atlantic.
The beach was spotless and went out on the kayaks and snorkeling, great fun. The privilege guests get orange towels and have reserved beach and pool areas, having been to Sandals who have their own Club offer, they don't differentiate to this degree and it gives you a sense of a class system...you need to appreciate this costs £4,000 for a weeks stay regardless of what option you book.
The Jamaican people and staff were fantastic, the pools staff especially "Delicious" were so funny.
All in all we had a great holiday and would definitely come back to Jamaica...would I choose Secrets over Sandals? As a couple Sandals offer couples only, there were large groups from the US and Canada, even a huge conference in the hotel which swelled the large groups...so to conclude great holiday, but it's back to Sandals or another couples hotel.

Room Tip: Go for a high floor
