“Beautiful Property ideal to explore old San Juan”
Reviewed 8 April 2013

A gorgeous place in a prime location to explore old San Juan. It is probably not an ideal property for extended stay with large families (or small families with young children) - there is only so much room one can reclaim when converting cells from a Carmelite convent into hotel suites. El Convento offers more of a European experience with beautifully appointed immaculately clean rooms, authentic quirky details, and lush common areas. Bathrooms are NYC sized but very clean and updated. Beds are comfortable but smallish so do not go for a one-bed room unless it's a romantic getaway and you are in the mood to cuddle (for no extra charge the hotel will offer very nice foldout beds that are actually larger than the ones that come with the room).
There is parking across the street for a reasonable fee (although a car is definitely not recommended if you plan on mainly staying in the old town). For those who would like to add some beach experience there is an "El Convento Beach club" - El Convento guests can get all day passes to two other properties located on the beach front (large casino style outfits with all of the best and the worst big all-inclusives have to offer).
Service is reasonably efficient and welcoming even though a bit slow (which is standard in Puerto Rico). Overall, highly recommended over any big chain properties. Will definitely come back.

We stayed 3 nights in Old San Juan before traveling to Isabela, PR for 3 nights at a beachfront resort, so we were not looking for a "beachy" experience. We enjoy walking around cities and experiencing the nightlife, so this hotel's location was perfect.

The hotel is beautifully decorated. Our room was on the first floor, so we didn't have much of a view, but we had a sunroom with an indoor fountain that provided nice ambience. We did have a king sized bed which was very comfortable.

They offer a great wine & cheese "happy hour" at 6pm - this was a nice touch. This area also always serves delicious coffee & tea around the clock.

The only downside to the hotel was that the hot tub did not work properly. It bubbled, but never truly got "hot," which is kind of the point, right? The pool was smaller than it appeared online, too. Our three days in OSJ were riddled with rain & clouds, so the hot tub would have been a nice option.

Stayed here in September of 2012. After four days on Vieques and a couple of days in Rio Grande we spent our last night at the El Convento. We arrived early and were unexpectedly upgraded to the Vanderbilt Suite. After checking in we went on a walking tour of Old San Juan. The El Convento is a GREAT hotel. This place exudes old world charm. The courtyard is beautiful. The Vanderbilt suite is amazing. The staff could not have been better. I mean everyone we encountered was professional, friendly and courteous. When going to PR plan to spend at least one day in Old San Juan and stay at the El Convento. You want be disappointed.
PS - When in PR try to get to Vieques to see the Biobay and go to El Yunque.

We stayed in Hotel El Convento one night before our cruise and it was a lovely charming hotel, in a great location. Our room was on the second floor in the back, so no view, but quiet and quaint. It had really cool high ceilings, a comfortable bed (queen only, no kings that I could find), a modernized bathroom (although still small), flat screen TV, coffeemaker and refrigerator with complementary water. After check out, we had the hotel hold our luggage while we wondered around Old San Juan before leaving for the ship. Everyone we encountered was pleasant and extremely helpful. Yes, it was expensive but when researching hotels, I found that most of them were expensive, so I was glad we made the choice to experience Hotel El Convento.

We stayed at the El Convento for 3 nights and found it to be a great location and very charming if a bit on the pricey side. Our room (2 double beds) was lovely, if not huge, and faced the square in from of the cathedral. There was some street noise, though a couple of guitar players were sweet. The staff could not have been more friendly and helpful. The pool is quite small as some have noted, but it's on an upstairs terrace that's great for catching the sunset with a glass of wine during the free 6 p.m. happy hour. We ate at the hotel restaurant one our last night. The food was decent if not amazing, but the setting was very romantic. The only glitch we had was that the wifi never worked properly in our room, though it did on the upstairs terrace. Old SJ is great for walking with many good bars and eating places. Altogether a most pleasant stay.
