I've stayed at Puertas three times, as well as at numerous places around the island so I have a pretty good perspective.
This is the ideal location for your first visit to Vieques. You are walking distance from all the bars and restaurants along the Malecon (seaside sidewalk) in Esperanza, and a short walk from some superb beaches.
As a guesthouse with only five (soon to be six) rooms, Puertas offers a highly personal level of service and comfort. If you have a group of five couples or singles, booking the entire place is just magnificent. You have the entire upstairs deck at your disposal. It's the closest thing to a penthouse apartment on Vieques.
The breakfast basket in the mornings is discreet, charming and tasty. And at dinner you have the unique convenience of having the island's best upscale restaurant on the first floor. El Quenepo is one of my favorite restaurants in the world.
Kate and Lisa are superb hosts - attentive to your every need.
Some visitors do note that the Malecon is not pin-drop silent. If you're averse to lively music and the morning greeting of a rooster, you might reconsider Vieques, because that's just an authentic part of life on the Malecon.

The tankless water heater means ample hot showers, and a new electric generator is a big comfort on an island where life is not always predictable.
A combination code at the gate protects your privacy from passers by, and I've never felt unsafe here.
The furnishings and bedding are pure 5-star comfort. They supply beach chairs, towels and coolers, so you don't have to waste your valuable island time looking for those.
My visits to Puertas have become an important part of my life and some of the most relaxing moments of the last decade. I will be back.More
