In a delightful setting, the Castle is very attractive and rather unusual compared to the "standard" castle with battlements etc. The stone is a lovely colour giving it a warm appearance. Plenty of car park spaces at the front. Easy access to the lovely tea room and cute gift shop. Note the bells high up on the wall near the shops Assume they were to call the servants. Definitely worth a visit.

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. The castle is certainly very unique compared to many in Scotland. We have a large car park on site and several spaces at the castle for those with mobility issues. You are right, the bells in the passage were the original bells to call the servants.

This is the home of the Maitland family. The castle has a fine collection of paintings, furniture and porcelain. It is well worth a visit.

From driving up to the imposing front view of this magnificent castle I wanted to explore and know more about its history. We were immediately impressed by the volunteer guides and their passion for this place. Most seemed to have been loyal to the Castle for many years. They were eager to share it's fascinating history; about the Lauder family itself who have lived and belonged here since the 16thC.
The Castle is undergoing renovation a great deal of which has been completed and is open again to the public. We were taken with the magnificent state rooms, particularly the ornate ceilings, these originally dated back to the time when the Castle was known as a palace . Throughout its history it has entertained royalty even dating back to the time of Bonnie Prince Charlie.
It's a Castle where you can explore and take your time to soak up this ancestry and history. There are guides throughout who stand quietly back until asked for information but are eager to 'tell all'.
The tea room serves generous sized snacks including homemade soups, and cakes.
For our four legged companions there was a walk through the woods winding its way down to the riverside with fantastic views across open countryside.
Thirlestane is well worth a visit and in doing so you will help to preserve this beautiful house for many more generations to come.
