Cool experience with a slightly creepy vibe. Our tour guide was knowledgeable and made learning fun. We were able to see different species of bats and learn about stalagmites and how the cave was used as a shelter years ago. I recommend visiting the caves when visiting Long Island.
Spent about an hour with Leonard who grew up playing in these caves and now bought the property and gives tours. Largest cave system in the Bahamas - pointed out 3 different types of bats and learned the history of the place and how it was formed. Call ahead to get a time with him - very near the Deans blue hole - and worth looking at - go check it out!
This was one of my favorite parts of Long Island. Ms. Cartright gave us the tour and supplied us with flashlights to go explore the caves with her as our guide. These caves are MUCH bigger than I thought they were going to be and we spent a good amount of time there exploring and seeing the bats. We went with 3 small kids (ages 9, 7 and 4) and they thoroughly enjoyed seeing something like this that we would never be able to see from where we live in South Florida. I highly recommend as an option to do when you want to take a break from the beaches and sun.
A must-see when visiting Long Island! Leonard gave us a great tour. It was fascinating to experience these beautiful caves.
Leonard guided us the quarter mile down the road to the cave entrance. Lots of science and history! Got to see three different types of bats. They mostly migrate back in April but there are a few year-round residents. Stop by for a tour! Small white sign a bit north of the Dean’s Blue Hole entrance. Sound side of the highway. White house on road.
This was a great tour and Leonard is a fantastic guide. He has so many personal stories from throughout his life that are interesting and funny. You just can't get that kind of tour anyplace else. I thought I would be freaked out by the bats, but they were tiny and didn't bother us at all. The caves are beautiful and I am so intrigued by their use as a hurricane shelter. This is one of those tours that you need to do every time you visit LI!
