I had a real adventure in trying to find the place on my first night in Todos Santos since I'd arrived at night and without a map, as well as this being my first trip to Mexico. Now that I know my whereabouts it's actually quite easy. Its the first left when you come off the hwy and three blocks down on your left. I was greeted by the old bald guy, whom I'd read about and whom I'd awoken since my arrival was so late - but he was friendly and summoned Martha to help me. She is a kind-hearted woman who speaks little English, but we had the whole check-in process worked out relatively easily. They take a small refundable room deposit.
All I wanted was a clean and cheap place to sleep as I didn't plan on hanging around the hotel at all. My room was spotless, bathroom very clean. The hard to reach areas such as the ceiling fan blades had a good crust of dust on them but it seemed ok. The screens were in great shape and very effective. It was really nice to have good screens, however there was a decent size gap under my door (which was delaminating). Matress was quit firm.
If you stay here expect to hear a whole lot at night (usually kicking in around 9:30): Dogs howling in harmony, crickets, romantic Mexican music cranking from someones house down the block, and the thud of the crashing waves half a mile away. I actually found the sound scape to be very comforting, especially the nighlty music coming through the neighbourhood. The morning brought a crowing contest amongst the local roosters, and the bright sunshine through the thin curtains was a wonderful daily reminder that I was waking up in small-town Mexico.
The pool area was basic and clean looking, and the parking lot was covered in rough brick pavers. The management is putting in an admirable effort to enhance the property with a wide range of plants and there are some nice large palms that tower above the second floor balcony.
i enjoyed the fact that it was on the outskirts of the main town area because I enjoyed taking different routes into town; about a 3-4 min drive. We walked to town and back one evening and it seemed to only take 15 min which we enjoyed. We didn't encounter any snarly dogs along the way. The neighbouing residents that I bumped into or drove past all seemed very friendly and always returned a wave or a smile.
I plan to stay here every time I'm back in town, but it definately won't be for everybody. There are no luxuries here, but for me that is perfect
