Staff was great, including Isabel M.A and Namien Torres. All staff very welcoming and friendly and made the stay more enjoyable. Rooms are cozy and the property has so much to offer. Highly recommend.

Our family of 4 (girls 6yrs and 9yrs) stayed at the Barceló Huatulco for 1 week over Spring Break. Overall, we had a wonderful time at this resort and absolutely fell in love with Huatulco! We would return to this resort and to Huatulco in the future, but we would consider staying at Dreams (right next door) next time as well.

This review is mostly focused on our experience with kids. We have travelled to various areas of Mexico with the kids every year since they were babies, with the Mayan Riviera being a favourite. Huatulco is now right up there with the Mayan! From our arrival at the airport, totally uncomplicated and easy with kids, to the short drive through the National Park to our resort, something just felt special and unique about Huatulco. No big city highway feel like the route to the Mayan. The staff at the resort were consistently polite and friendly- probably the best service we have experienced in Mexico yet.

Beach:

The water was beautiful, and we found the waves in front of the resort just right for our kids to boogie board and play and of course gather unique shells on the beautiful stretch of beach. My husband and I also kayaked, stand up paddle boarded, and tried a little snorkelling off the beach as well. (Snorkelling was not the best- not much to see- but we had fun anyway). The beach (at least while we were there) was not "wade in" safe for younger kids but my 6 year old daughter was fine enjoying the waves once she got the hang of it. She needed our help handling her boogie board and wore a resort life jacket, available for free, right at the beach. We watched younger kids run in and out with the surf and had a blast splashing in the waves as well, with their parents.

Room / Premium Section:

We paid for the Premium section, and found it well worth it. After speaking with other hotel guests, we understand we had priority booking for the a la carte restaurants where they had trouble booking them at all. Our room was in a nice location overlooking the pool with an ocean view, close to the stairway down to the beach/pool/restaurant. Absolutely wonderful location, it was nice to be so close to everything! The mattresses and pillows were soft/comfortable for Mexico and we had no complaints about the room or air conditioning. One thing to note for families with younger kids is the Premier section rooms don't have bathtubs, so inquire in advance if that's important. There was an air-conditioned mini lobby area for Premium guests, with a small selection of food 24/7. Our check-in / out was quick and private in this area, which was nice. A couple things to note- our room was missing several Premium amenities (towels on check-in, slippers, the kids water bottles). It took a couple days for those things to come after we requested them which wasn't a big deal, but worth noting for the resort staff info.

Restaurants:

There are two buffet restaurants. One off the hotel lobby area, with a small outside patio and one open air restaurant next to the pool/beach with beautiful ocean views. We found the buffet restaurant at the lobby disappointing, it was the only one open for dinner buffet and we found it limited on space and food variety. That being said, we had what we needed for meals, there was always something for everyone in our party, it just wasn't the spread we are used to at bigger resorts. We almost always had breakfast / lunch at the beach buffet, and had no complaints about the food there. We found the service at the beach buffet excellent (Luis in particular, always smiling). We loved the made to order omelettes and crepes (crepes at the lobby buffet only). Overall, we have enjoyed the buffets at other resorts more, but it wouldn't stop us from coming back.

Kids Activities:

When we chose Barcelo over Dreams, price was a factor, but the final choice was made mostly because of the water park. We expected the kids club and activities to be better, given the water park draws families with young kids. The kids club had potential, it was located right next to the beach with a trampoline and park, but we were disappointed. On our previous vacations, we have our kids with us the majority of the time, but we typically like them to play at the kids club for a few hours at a time here and there. It's normally a perfect place for them to meet new friends, and they usually look forward to going. The "indoor" section of this kids club was tiny (space for a small table only) and the kids club kids and staff were rarely seen through the resort. We are used to seeing the kids club groups around the resort, having a great time and doing various activities, drawing interest from kids. The leader was not very outgoing (although the kids said she was nice) and we were able to convince our kids to go only once, for a couple hours. Considering our kids still talk about the leaders and the fun they had at other resorts such as the Gran Bahia Principe Akumal (Mayan Riviera), and the Grand Sirenis (Mayan Riviera) and the Iberostar Playa Mita (Punta Mita) we feel the hotel could make some small changes to improve on the kids club experience.

The other surprise was that this resort had no "mini disco". At other resorts, they have fun singing and dancing activities for kids called the "mini disco" at the theatre before the evening entertainment starts, and they even include the kids in some of the evening shows. They had no "mini disco" at this resort, which was very much missed by us all. Our kids truly have a blast playing silly games, singing and dancing at the mini disco (their own evening party) while parents can sit in the audience, and watch them have fun over a drink. I hope Barceló Huatulco considers including a mini disco before the evening show in the future!

The water park / slides were great for young kids. There were 3 separate pool areas, right next to each other. The one with the swim-up bar was adults-only, then there was a family pool, and the more shallow pool with the water park. The adults-only pool seemed to be heated, while the family pool seemed cooler but more refreshing (not too cold at all).

Excursions:

We did two excursions. We booked a 7 bay tour and snorkelling excursion on our flight through Sunwing, and it was wonderful! If the group is big enough, it is on a catamaran, but our group was on a boat for about 20 people. The boat dropped us in a nice bay for snorkelling, right on the shore. Both girls enjoyed snorkelling and the beach was beautiful. Then we ate a delicious seafood lunch at a restaurant at another bay (additional cost but worth it).

The second excursion was booked at the resort, to the Iguana sanctuary, a chocolate "factory" (farm) and then for a turtle release experience. We had a great time, the guide was incredible and we learned a lot about the area and about iguanas and sea turtles on this trip. The trip to the Turtle release was about an hour, through the National Park.

Overall, our experience at the Barcelo Huatulco was wonderful. We would consider going back, or trying the neighbouring resort next time (Dreams). Thanks to the very friendly staff at the Barcelo!

Room Tip: Premium section has rooms closest to the pool/beach/buffet
