It's hard to write a review since mane others have already described the good food and nice experience.

But I wanted to give another vote for Pepe's. In summary it's an unassuming, but nice place, and you'd enjoy the tacos. Hint: Don't miss the shrimp taco!

Thank InfTraveler

While staying in Puerto Vallarta, we asked one of the staff members at our hotel where to go for the best tacos, and he recommended Pepe's. We are so glad we were able to try Pepe's amazing tacos! The food was delicious!! We were only able to visit Pepe's once during our stay--we hope to return to PV soon so we can try it again!

Recently visited Puerto Vallarta with my boyfriend, sister and parents. My parents took us to this place on the first night of the trip and I think we visited it 4 more times over our week long trip! The staff are incredible, tacos are delicious and the beer is cold! We were there at all hours and the consistency of the food is amazing! Our one sever (Wakim) spelling could be wrong, was amazing. By the second visit he had our orders pretty much memorized! We love this place and will happily be returning!

So good. Salsa flavoursome (three kinds, including properly spicy). Tacos plentiful and varied. We loved the El Pastor and the huricane and volcane the best. Ate here twice, would have eaten here more if we could have done (i.e., weren't so full from other tasty food elsewhere). The margaritas are huge and made with fresh lime juice that I watched being squeezed. Excellent service and fun ambience. Very much a local place, with only the odd table of tourists. We liked that.

Thank Stephanie R

I had heard about tacos al pastor while planning our second trip to Puerto Vallarta. They start with a tompo, or vertical rotisserie, upon which BBQ'd pork is cooked. It's similar to a donair in that it cooks on a vertical rod and has a heritage stemming from Lebanese immigrants. But the similarities end there as there will not be a pita with onions, tomato and proper sweet sauce, the way it's made in the Maritimes. But it tastes good on its own merits.

Servings are sliced from the tompo so that dishes can be prepared to order. Any additions to the taco are typically cooked to order on an open, flat-top grill. After scouring reviews and asking some of the helpful hotel staff, taxi drivers and tourists we decided to give Pepe's Tacos a try. They have been in business for over 30 years and are enjoyed by the tourists and local Mexicanos alike.

When you drive up the bumpy cobblestones to Pepe's location in Centro, you see a simple store front with a sign identifying the premises, two tompo grills, a flat-top grill inside and a tall cooler of frosty beverages on the back wall, beside the washrooms. There are photos of some of their offerings on the wall, and the sink is located outside the washrooms, because even if you don't have to go, you will be washing your hands of all of the juicy goodness you just ate with your meal. The interior is spartan, but clean. We were not here for the decor or the ambience. We were here because it was lunch time and sustenance was required.

When you are seated and menus provided, order your drink right away as you will need it if you decide to take 'just a little taste' of the four-way condiment tray that is placed on the table. There are, if I recall correctly, two hot sauces, guacamole sauce and tomatillo. The spicy sauces are what I would describe as 'hot' and 'OMG it burns'. Ask your server to identify them for you to avoid any inadvertent surprises. You are also provided with a couple of cheesy tostados (think flat, crispy taco) and a plate of grilled sweet onions. These were a very tasty prelude to a thoroughly enjoyable lunch.

With Pacificos in hand we perused the menu and decided to try a Hawaiiana, a Tornado and the Pastor BBQ Pork. My Sweety ordered the Hawaiiana, which is a quesadilla with cheese, bacon, al pastor meat and grilled pineapple. A real quesadilla is not a neatly folded soft taco with cheese and toppings inside. This was a soft taco with melted cheese, laid flat and pretty much piled with toppings. All she really said while figuring out the least messy way to consume her treat would be loosely translated as 'yummy'. We split the Tornado, which is a crispy corn tortilla with cheese, chicken and assorted other grilled goodies. For the tacos al pastor, both the corn flour and wheat flour tacos were enjoyed. I still had some of the grilled sweet onion appetizer left and added it to the pile of ingredients already on the tacos.

This is a busy, authentic Mexican restaurant. There's a cook on the flat-top, a dishwasher out back and three waiters running back and forth, slicing pork from the tompo, fetching drinks and delivering orders from the grill. If you want a place where the waiter hovers in the background waiting to attend to your every need, then keep walking and save those seats for someone who wants a good meal at a decent price in a truly authentic setting. If you want something, tell the nearest waiter. It will happen. Sitting at your table quietly and waiting for servers to come to you only happens when you eat at a fancy tourist joint.

Our luncheon for two with cervezas (beers) came to the princley sum of $17 Canadian. And remember to tip the staff on the way out. They work their butts off to serve the customers and deserve your appreciation. I really have no idea where all of the Average and below reviews came from. Perhaps people expecting a Mexican themed dining 'experience' as opposed to the real thing. If Pepe's is not your cup of tea, you have my pity, but we will certainly return. The best part is that they also cater.
