Owner description: This old bar still has the bullet holes left by Pancho Villa on one of his visits.

Sure the place is atmospheric, but that's about it.
The food is not good, the service very impersonal. And they add funny things to your bill.

The best option is certainly to come and have a drink by the bar. But you should avoid the restaurant

We stop here only because we have come downtown on a Saturday afternoon. Its old and has character. The building is owned by the government and leased to the bar owner. We never eat here, we just have a drink at the bar. This is a daytime place. The streets clear out at dark.

I was extremely disappointed with this place. We had the worst service ever when we went to la Opera last week-end. After spending 3 months in Meixco city, i have visited many bars and restaurants, but i never had such a rude service as in La Opera. The decor is worth seeing, but that's about it. The manager and waiters are rude, and they refused to serve us because we did not order a complete order, but rather drinks and appetizers. There are many other much better options in the center.

I went there over the weekend with a friend and the manager was rude and wouldn't give us a table even though half the place was empty because we were only 2 customers. There are far better options downtown with a much better service

Private booths dot the outer rim of this 19th century bar and restaurant just a few blocks from the Zocalo. Vested waiters serve a number of good mole dishes for about $5 US, and the wall of fame here is quite impressive. Photos of presidents, movie stars, and yes, an article about Pancho Villa's famous ride in the front door and bullet holes in the roof are all there to see. The day we were there a masked Mexican wrestler and his entourage were seated at one of the private dining booths behind the red velvet curtains (yes, he had his mask on when he left). A must visit destination for the Mexico City traveler. The food was good, and the history of the place made it perfect. The formal waiters are very friendly and helpful.
