Going to see the Chichen Itza Temple was the highlight of our vacation walking on the grounds that the rich came to pray was a fantastic feeling. Carlos our tour guide was raised in a Mayan Reservation and he had a lot of History to tell and the passion that he explained it with was bone chilling. He was saying how the entire grounds was raised up 3 to 4 meters so that the foundations would be solid. The entire trip to the Mayan Reservation, the Cenote swim hole, and the Valladolid church was one more from my bucket list. Thank You " Mucho Gracias"

Just returned from a vacation in Cancun Mexico & wanted to let you know of what I thought was the highlight of our stay,a trip to the Ancient Mayan city of Chichen Itza with Alberto Morales & his company 1% Travel. He was a great guy with a pleasant personality with a vast knowledge of the history & culture of the people past & present of the area.
He spoke perfect English & made us both feel very comfortable from the moment he picked us up from the hotel. It was a huge, clean vehicle with air-con and a cooler-box,stocked with refreshments for us,which was greatly appreciated and a great comfort in the heat of the hot Mexican weather.
Timetables or schedules were no issue as Alberto asked us where, what we wanted to go and see & how much time we wanted to spend at any of each of our planned stops.(I'm sure he would have stayed out with us till midnight entertaining us if we had asked him to).
Chitchen Itza was hugely interesting & made the more enjoyable & entertaining with the commentary of Alberto's vast knowledge along the way.No compulsary stops or hassle to buy any tacky souvenirs at any part of the day, which was a blessing.
As he had family local in Vallodoid,he took us to a great little restaurant for dinner and a couple of tequilas,& a very interesting tour of the traditional Mexican city.We didn't want to go swimming in the local cenotes with the hordes people from the typical hotel bus tours,so Alberto took us to a cenote off the beaten track & it was breath taking, but most of all we were the only ones there so had it all to ourselves. It was like a scene from Jurassic Park, with an almost fully covered roof apart from a small hole where the sunlight streamed in through the ancient vegetation &stalactites/stalagmites,and finally hit the perfectly clear refreshing natural swimming pool at the bottom.I could have stayed there all day!
Unfortunately my camera battery died on the day,so Alberto took many pictures of our tour on his I-Pad,and emailed them to me when I returned home which I am greatly in his debt for.He returned us safely to our hotel at our requested time fully satisfied with our memorable day.I would certainly use his services again and would certainly recommend him to others.Ok you may pay a little more, but to me was definitely worth the treat for the 1 to 1 personal service!

Based on feedback of long coach rides with multiple pick-ups, the prospect of a long day and two children under ten to consider, we paid the extra for a private tour with Mexican Travel. They sent us an incredibly well informed guide, called Simon, with his own spacious and comfortable, air-conditioned and stocked minivan.

From the moment Simon picked us up, he tuned into our needs, shared his wealth of information about the Mayans until he sensed we were ready to move on or have a rest and steered us past the swathes of people keen to sell their wares for $1 (which ultimately becomes your "discount").

The point to point transport allowed us to avoid the queues, time our arrivals to avoid the crowds and made the most of our valuable time on what would otherwise have felt like a very long day for the little ones.

Ek Balam was fantastic, as the little ones were allowed to clamber all over the ruins and scale the pyramid, from where one could appreciate just how flat the Yukatan Peninsula is.

Hubiku was a great place for lunch and a "cool" dip in the amazing turquoise Cenote with a stunning skylight with water raining down from above.

Chichen Itza deserves its place as one of the 7 standing wonders of the world. We would advise going in the height of summer, as even in April it was distinctly warm to be going round.

We had an amazing day and would not have enjoyed it half as much, had we not had such a good guide and a private tour that saved us wasting a moment!

We booked our day excursion to Chichen Itza and Haniku Cenote through Lomas Tours. They also set us up with a very reputable tourist guide - Simon Chavez Flores. He was extremely knowledgeable and made our day trip extremely memorable!

We took the full day tour to see Chichen Itza, leaving from Isla Mujeres. We ended up in various souvenir traps spending 3/4 of the tours fending off people who were selling "artifacts" at ridiculous prices.
Chichen Itza is fantastic and everything you need is there - restaurants, guides, shops. There is no need to stop anywhere on the way for bad buffé food.
So our advice is: if you want to see the magnificent site of Chichen Itza - get a transportation there and skip the full day tours. They waste your time.
