First off, this was an all inclusive trip. We read all the warnings about alcohol, scams and timeshare etc. Bottom line, read up and do your planning before you go. There are NO ISSUES with tainted alcohol or shady employees here! Period! Take $100-200 of dollar bills and fives and tip for your service. It's that simple! You take care of them, they go out of their way to take care of you. You will get to know your bartenders and servers as they move around the three restaurants and bars and also over to neighboring Secrets. We would typically tip $1 when grabbing a couple drinks during the day, and $10 over the course of the evening at the bar. My drink was always replenished without asking. Other people would ask and wonder why...tip them! They all know and speak fairly good English so by the end of our trip we had developed great relationships with them and hope to see them all again next year!

Arrived in a bit of confusion, tip #1 when leaving airport customs, walk directly outside the building to the shuttles and ignore the people and booths in the lobby. Will save you 10 minutes of pushing rentals. Rent all your stuff through the Vacation handler or hotel. We arrived at the hotel after a 30 minute shuttle through high cruise line traffic. Sunscape is located pretty far SW and away from San Miguel which we liked. Check in took a bit so we grabbed a bite to eat at Seaside. Great food, small portions to alleviate waste. Want more? Order double portion or second dish! Also they will make whatever you want so don't be afraid to ask (if you tip of course). $2 per meal was my tip, $5 at evening nice restaurants Seaside and El Patio. Roger at El Patio is the best waiter and makes for fantastic meal and drinks! Ask for him and the Margarita shots....if you are bold have him make you the "Copa de Nada" wow! Portafino is buffet and great for Breakfast every morning with wide selection of fruit and french toast etc. Fresh made custom omelets too! Don't forget to tip your housekeeping and they will get used to your sleeping patterns and clean on your schedule :)
Call the front desk to stock your fridge. Tip the delivery boy and get that fridge filled faster next time ha! It took 3-4 calls the first day or so FYI.
Daily beach life, put a towel or book on a chair early as it gets busy during the weekends. Grab the free snorkel gear from the stand by the main bar for 2 hours at a time. If you go to Punta Sur or some other pay to play area, rent the gear from Sunscape for $10 for 24 hours but need to be known by the rental guy and tip him. It's $15-20 a piece at Punta Sur. Go by the pier and see barracuda. Right side you will see starfish, octopus and stingrays all close to shore. Crystal clear water but BRING WATER SHOES! The water gets rocky 3-5 feet in!
Night life. The beach bar closes at 5pm. People all grab dinner then hit the main pool and bar by Seaside. You will also see all the Secrets dressed up people coming over to our resort. Know why?? Bc there are NO BARS ON THE BEACH THERE!! Grab a swing and hang out. We did it 5/7 nights and this is where all the fun and people watching happens! Get to know the best flair bartenders in the area - Mauricio, Augustin and Mario!! Don't forget good old Irving, great guy! Enjoy their company, sing along with the music and order doubles ;) Only beer served is Dos Equis but you get used to it. Bumblebee shot from Mauricio and Shark Bite from Mario shhhh, that's a secret! See if Mauricio still has the green laser light I gave him haha - great times!!!
Car rental. I decided to play it by ear and rent it from the hotel front lobby. Please ask for Wilbert he is the BEST. Saved a lot of money and got a free jeep rental for 24 hours by attending one 90-120 minute timeshare presentation. Just say no to manager at end and voila get your $100 voucher. They will hound you and call the room so be prepared to do this if you want that car voucher. If you plan on staying at resort the whole time just ignore them. I suggest renting a car and going to the Mayan ruins and East bars and beaches. Massive Waves and amazing private places. Punta Sur (south part of island) is worth a day also $10 a piece to get in. Amazing reef and snorkeling there. We also rented a car for a second day and went East side again and then to Guidos in town for the best dinner EVER (twice lol!) see my review of them on Yelp.
The shuttle back is tricky if you lose your voucher tell the front desk and they get a cab. The cab will be reimbursed at the airport by the Shuttle service so dont sweat it!

All in all, amazing experience will definitely do it again! Relax, be respectful and take care of the hired hands. Tip and be generous to all and they will in return!

Room Tip: Upgrade to the Ocean Front Suite or Deluxe Ocean room. Ours was Deluxe and was 25 feet from the wate...

My husband and I just returned from a wonderful one week stay at Sunscape Sabor. I will start out saying we have stayed at many all-inclusive resorts the last one being a brand new Secrets at Playa Mujeres. We were informed that the Sunscape Sabor resort was the oldest resort of the Secrets/Dreams/Sunscape resort brand. This being said, it definitely shows its age but not to the point that it put any damper on our ability to have a great time, be grateful, and enjoy the beauty of the beaches and stunning Cozumel water.

We flew into Cozumel and were amazed at how fast we made it through customs at the airport. We had a 20-30 minute shared shuttle to the resort and upon arrival at the resort we asked for an upgrade to an ocean view room. We originally were booked in a garden view room. The man at the front desk gave us a price for the upgrade and we gracefully declined. He excused himself to talk with his boss and came back and presented us with a free ocean view suite upgrade. Obviously we took it! We stayed in room #3334 and we couldn't have been more surprised. The room was on the top floor with a wrap around deck and amazing views of the ocean which was maybe 30 feet away. Not too many resorts have rooms in such close proximity to the beach/ocean.

The room---there may have been a couple of reasons why we received the free upgrade. The room was dated as I am sure all of them were. Our bathtub did not drain. We did call maintenance to have it fixed and they came shortly after. It helped a tiny bit but not much. We decided to just roll with it. There was a very strong sewer smell that permeated the room from time to time. This was evidenced outside as well but some days it seemed as if the sewer was right in our room. Kind of gross but it wasn't all the time. The morning seemed to be worse. We didn't spend a lot of time in the room so we decided it wasn't enough for us to complain and switch rooms.

The resort seemed to be quiet and low key. A mix of families and couples. They had two bars on the beach both with swings. No swim up pool bar. Plenty of beach chairs in both the sun and the shade. I loved that we could switch to shade without having to worry about not finding a chair. Occasionally a bartender or waitress would come by and take our drink order on the beach.

Beach--The beach is really great! If you do go in the water I would recommend you wear aqua shoes. The bottom is pretty rocky and the coral is sharp.

Activities--we loved playing beach volleyball. The snorkeling is really fun especially if it is a calm day. On windier days we took the Hobie Cat out which was a blast. Paddle boards and kayaks are also available free of charge.

Time share meeting---we are not big fans of going to time share meetings but decided to do one to receive $150 (which we used for a discovery scuba dive session). Chloe conducted the meeting at the Oceana Grill at Secrets. Great food! She did not pressure us but did of course try many angles to get us interested in the Unlimited packages. It took a little over two hours but for us it was worth it as we essentially got our scuba diving class for free.

Scuba Diving---My husband and I signed up for the Discovery Scuba dive session at the Dive House which is right next to Portofino's (the buffet). The total cost for both of us was $160. It was my first time diving and I was pretty nervous. We started out by going over a safety booklet and taking a quick test. Hermando was our instructor and he was very calm and informative. We then went to the dive pool and practiced some skills before loading onto a boat for the dive. The weather was great! We went to a location right in front of the resort. I took the backwards plunge and down we went. I stayed very close to the line that was attached to the instructor. I did wander off a little bit and got very anxious when I realized he was swimming faster than I was. Overall, it was an amazing first time experience and what a great place to try it! The entire scuba lesson and dive took a little over 3 hours. Definitely worth the money! We tipped Hermando well.

Food--This is where I would give this resort a little lower rating. Not a lot of restaurant options and the food got mundane. I eat a gluten and dairy free diet and felt like a lot of items were not labeled clearly. Not a big deal, but I was occasionally frustrated at the limited options.
Seaside Grill---This is the grill next to the main pool. The music was occasionally obnoxiously loud. They serve a limited menu of burgers, fries, salads, ceviche, burritos and tacos. I loved making my own taco with the ceviche, pico de gallo, and the green hot picante sauce. The green picante sauce is not for the weak!! It is very spicy! Seaside turns into a nighttime restaurant with a different menu at 6 PM. So so food. Enrique was our server one night and he was wonderful!
El Patio--This is the Mexican restaurant near the pool. This was probably our favorite restaurant. The food was so so but overall they had a decent menu to choose from. They had decent margaritas. The waiters entertained us with their dessert making fire tricks.
Portofino's--This is where the breakfast, lunch, and dinner buffets are located. The setting is amazing! Most of the tables are right next to the ocean. Make sure to look over the edge near the water...we saw 3-4 large iguanas sunning themselves everyday. The food quality was so so. Seemed like they had mainly the same options everyday. The omelets were good. Fresh fruit was always available. Wish they had bacon but never saw any. Lunchtime had more salad options. Dinner buffet had more meat options like grilled steak and chicken. The steak was great.

Secrets--This resort is right next door and they have access to Sunscape but not vice versa ALTHOUGH since we were not traveling with kids we would sneak over there on occasion and enjoy a cocktail. They have better alcohol choices (top shelf). They have a couple of short slides at one of the pools and we enjoyed being rebels by sneaking down them. You can eat at the restaurants if you buy a bottle of wine. The wine is overpriced but we wanted to experience a variety of food other than what we had at Sunscape. We went to the Sushi restaurant one night and enjoyed amazing views at the Sky Bar. The sushi was not that great. We also went to Bordeaux (the French restaurant). Again, an overpriced bottle of wine but so worth it! The food was really amazing! Totally recommend it.

The Market Cafe at Secrets was under construction which was a bummer because I believe we did have free access to it.

Spa--Although we did receive "resort credit" upon checking in, they put so many restriction on how you can use it. The spa prices are outrageous which is really disappointing. I would never pay over $150 for a 60 minute massage. We did use the Hydrotherapy circuit one day which was fun. It is normally $35 but they had a $10 special. A great way to relax with access to the spa. The cold plunge is very frigid.

Gym--I used the gym a couple of days and it wasn't anything fancy but definitely sufficed.

Taxi--we rented a taxi to get into town for shopping. It cost $15 one way. The shopping is your typical Mexican style. Store owners constantly trying to get your into their stores.

Pros--The proximity to the beach/ocean is unbelievable! Generally quiet. Plenty of beach chairs and towels. Service was decent. Housekeepers did a wonderful job. Plenty of activities. Snorkeling and scuba was wonderful.

Cons--Older resort in need of upgrades. The smell of sewer was sometimes very strong, food options got mundane. Not a top choice resort if you have dietary allergies.

Overall---If you are going to Sunscape thinking it will be a 5 star knock your socks off resort you will be disappointed. If you are going to Sunscape on a budget and looking to enjoy the beauty of Cozumel without the need for a brand new resort and high quality food you will be grateful that you did. If you are going to look for the negative in any place you better believe that is what will presented to you. It is really up to you whether or not you want to choose to look at the beauty of the experience or wallow in what you perceive to not be perfect. We chose to look for the beauty and that is what we got.

We have visited this resort about 8 times in the last 5 years, would not stay anywhere else. Juan Carlos & Javier Porfiriio are always here to welcome us back home. From breakfast at Portofino's to lunch at the Sunny Side Grill (get the nachos), to dinner at the Patio - there is something for everyone. The entertainment staff keeps the music going and offers anything from Zumba to volleyball to stretching on the mats - in the pool - each day. Juan Carlos greets us each morning to see if there is anything we need. The beach is beautiful and you can walk south for miles and our trip would not be complete without jumping of the pier also. We come here for the diving and this resort provide what we need. The rooms are large enough, clean, and their is always a nice spot to dry our gear from the next day. The entertainment shows down at the new Portofio area is very nice.

We had an ocean from room & it's definitely worth the upgrade. It's a fantastic location to watch the sun go down every evening & worth the extra. The hotel is one of the cheapest in the group & a more expensive one is situated next door... That's not worth the extra money! We went for a visit as part of a sales pitch (worth doing as it gets you a hire car & access to the fabulous eco park on the southern tip of the island for $20!). The other hotel looked 'boxy'. Sunscape has lots of rooms in 'houses' with thatched roofs to add to the ambiance. All the restaurants produced good quality food & all the staff were very friendly & helpful... We think the options we chose really do give superb value for money & it all helped to make this a fabulous holiday!

Room Tip: Ocean front is DEFINITELY worth the upgrade price

(Chapter I) My wife and I originally booked our stay 4 Nov-8 Nov and Pablo at front desk made sure all of our needs were met. Special mention goes out to Juan Carlos, el Fuerte, with our luggage; Laura at Portofino breakfast with her forever smile, plus Justo, Victor and Antonio for their great service (at a breakfast buffet!); Frankie at El Patio with his dessert especial; and Darwin & team were there to make sure our mini fridge was stocked daily. I had stayed here 2 years ago and this time (first time for my wife), the food at all the restaurants were MUCH improved such that, my wife's expectations of the food were more than exceeded. Throughout our stay, Pablo (front desk) went out of his way to make us feel like such VIP guests, we extended our stay through 11 Nov.

(Chapter II) We loved our stay so much (from our room, the staff, to the beautiful views and sunsets, beach, restaurants and all the amenities), on our originally scheduled departure day, we decided to extended our stay for a few more days. Much of our enjoyment was thanks to all the staff and Pablo at front desk, with the attention he put into making our stay extra special. Just like 2 years ago when I stayed here, if Pablo wasn't available, Karina was there to make sure our needs were met. Side note: the hot water was out resort-wide for a few hours one day and some irate guy took it out on Karina at Front Desk; Karina remained professional and gracious throughout this guy's rant. Dude, get a drink, enjoy the beautiful view, the hot water was back on in no time! In addition to the staff previously mentioned, Vivas at the dinner buffet (Portofino) was such a pleasant surprise, we forgot we were at a buffet! Thanks again Pablo, Karina and all the staff for an AWESOME stay. My wife and I will be back.
