Our party of 6 arrived at Vantanas a day earlier than our reservation was made for (our mistake) and we were very disappointed that there were no rooms available and had been traveling for 12 hours by the time we arrived. To our amazement the owners gave us there private quarters and went elsewhere to stay for the night just so we could have a place to stay. We doubt there are many places that would do that for their guests! Also the staff were incredibly attentive, helpful, and polite. The rooms were very spacious with the ocean right outside our patio. We never used the air conditioning as we had our patio doors open nightly to listen to the incredible ocean waves. Lots of iguanas visited which was quite entertaining. The surf was very strong and not safe for children, however, there was a very nice pool to play and cool off in. Dinner was excellent and very reasonably priced. Would stay at Vantanas again.

We drove past the first time because there is no sign. It is peaceful and beautiful. The rooms are large and airy. Ours looked onto the ocean through a full wall window with sliding doors. We watched the sunrise and the moonrise (it was red!) from bed. The beds are the largest I have found in any hotel - larger than a king. The ocean is loud and near. The doors have little screen windows to allow a breeze through the room. The beach extends a long way and was usually empty of people. Big waves / boogieboarding was good our first day, ocean swimming on the subsequent.

Breakfast is included. They have dinner for guests which was good and inexpensive ($74 for 4, with ice cream and 2 glasses of wine). They do not advertise lunch but made us quesadillas and guacamole lunch when I asked. The pool is very nice.

Next door is Coconuts. It is a bar and restaurant with silly signs. It does have a sign on the road - look for that if you go. A lot of people were in there. If we craved a basket of fries we would have gone. We could not hear or see them from the hotel.

We went with our kids, after staying 3 nights on the more tourist side of the island. Other families were there too. Our 10 year old said "there's not much to do, but it is peaceful". Really this is a honeymoon place.

Room Tip: we stayed in room 1

Tucked in the cliffs on the "other side” of the island, away from the hustle and bustle of the cruise ship docks and all-inclusive's, Ventanas al Mar is a true get-away. Powered by generator, electricity and wi-fi are not a given, but the exquisite view, the ocean breeze and the sound of the crashing waves make this hotel an experience to remember.

Breakfast is included. Enjoy fresh squeezed orange juice, fresh fruit and an assortment of menu items on the patio with the sea as a backdrop. The food is fresh and delicious. Service is not fast though, forego breakfast if you're in a hurry to start exploring the beaches. Dinner is also available by reservation. Since the quiet side of Cozumel is powered solely by generator, restaurants close early and it's necessary to plan ahead if you want a late dinner here.

Beach towels are available if you ask for them. A rental car is a must and a map of the island is helpful. After a day in the sun — snorkeling, beach walking, and exploring beautiful Cozumel — this quiet retreat on the “other side” is a true gem.

This hotel is the complete opposite of the all-inclusive resort experience. No plastic bracelets, disco, buffets or crowded beach. The pace is slow and relaxed.
Rooms - our room was spacious and comfortable. Be prepared to accept that the rooms (and the property in general) do show some wear, but keep in mind that this hotel is mere yards from the surf and sun, weather and salt take their toll. The room was clean.
Beach - the hotel sits on a coral ledge and there is a sandy stretch of sand adjacent. There were three palapas and a covered structure providing shade. There were sufficient lounge chairs. Seaweed was in abundance during our trip, but they worked to clear what they could. The surf was quite rough during our stay - I doubt that this a particularly swimmer-friendly beach, but children enjoyed the small pool.
Food - breakfast is included and the huevos rancheros and omelets were excellent. We also had tacos and quesadillas there a couple of times and found the lunch to be far superior to anything we had at any of the nearby beach bars. We had dinner at the hotel each night and found the simple but well-prepared offering to be excellent.
This is not a resort. If you want to sleep-in, have coffee then breakfast, lounge on the beach and read, go to lunch, lounge and read some more, have dinner and drinks and sleep to the sound of the surf, then this is the place. The staff were friendly and helpful. At the conclusion of our stay, the manager was having trouble getting us a cab to the ferry pier because several cruise ships were in port. He had us driven to the pier in the hotel's pickup truck as a courtesy.

Are you looking to get away from it all? Do you just want the constant sound of the surf, lovely blue and green ocean waters, spectacular sunrises, star-filled night skies you won't see in built-up areas, steady trade winds, spacious (comfortable, a bit dated and funky here and there, but lovely in a spartan, no-frills way) rooms with small balconies facing the sea, open-air sitting and dining areas, a small pool, a beach with palapas for shade and chairs for lounging?

If that sounds like your kind of place, then come here, to the only hotel on the east (windward, i.e., very windy!) coast of Cozumel. It is the perfect place for people who don't need luxury but want to a place without distractions like planes, noisy watercraft, or hordes of tourists. The rooms come with a basic breakfast, and you can order dinner in advance if you wish (the menu is limited but the food is decent and very moderately-priced). The combination of wind and surf can be heavy and you'll need to go elsewhere on the island (not far) to snorkel, dive or, at times, swim. The staff, especially the manager, Miguel, and Ruben, who works the afternoon and evening shifts, are discreetly ever-present, and are ready to help with extra bottled water, beach towels, an oversized cocktail, driving tips, help arranging for taxi service, recommendations for local restaurants, sights, and activities, and pretty much anything you might need. The a/c apparently only runs at night (we didn't need it), there's no TV, and wifi access is limited to the public areas -- but those "limitations" are kind of the point of this place. It's the ideal spot if you want to spend at least part (if not all) of your visit just hanging out, reading, sipping a drink, and luxuriating in the natural beauty and solitude of this corner of Cozumel.

Room Tip: Upper floors for privacy, quiet, and spectacular views.
