The last time we were at Mia Reef, it was owned by Avalon. The hotel was for sale at the time in 2013, and although clean it needed to be updated, 1/2 of the hotel was not in use, and the villas were extremely dated. We were ready to sell our timeshare with Avalon after our visit with our son (and 2 of his friends) this year. That perspective changed once we got through the issues with booking (being Avalon members was not helpful this time because no Avalon rep there to help). Upon arrival at the hotel, we were greeted by Jose, a gentleman more than a bellman, he was the "knower" of all! He took our bags in, and as we were checking in, brought us champagne. Throughout the entire trip, Jose was there to help us from needing towels for the beach to directions of where to eat in town! But the hotel was beautiful! The colors are very Caribbean, white and so clean! The entire hotel is open again, with several dining options, and a spa (billed separately). We were escorted to our rooms in the villa section, which overlooked the ocean towards the hotel/dock side. Once we were settled in, we headed to the beach area. The water is crystal clear and beautiful hues of turquoise, blue and deep azure blue with white beaches. Again, very clean, chairs updated, and lots of choices as to which side of the island you'd care to sit. My son speaks fluent Spanish and once it got out he was fluent, all of the wait staff would talk to him as though he was part of the family. Very comfortable feeling! Giovanni Cruz Sanchez was one of the beach side servers who took very good care to bring us our cool drink selections promptly and with a smile! He was always helping me with my Spanish! Luis and Jesus at the poolside bar were right on it with drinks and remembered what we liked after the 1st day (the drink menu is 5 pages long, so it took a while to decide a favorite or 2). There were activities all day long for the 19 year olds to not have to sit on the beach with the parents (volleyball, kayaking, snorkeling, salsa dancing, zumba, etc, etc). Humberto, the new dance instructor made the salsa dancing fun and entertaining to watch as 2 of the 3 young men strutted their stuff! We met with Fernando then Edgar in the sales office about our Avalon timeshare, and we told them that we were going to sell our timeshare, but after this stay we decided to change over to Mia Reef Club (not a timeshare)! The updated rooms were so lovely and clean! We had hot water throughout our entire shower, something that didn't happen in 2013. The staff was so welcoming and helpful, even those that did not communicate in English so well. Would very much recommend this resort!!
