This was our 7th trip to Isla Mujeres and our first visit to Hotel Secreto. We have stayed all over the island, and I think Secreto has the best of both worlds as far as location goes. You are minutes away from Playa Norte and all the amazing restaurants and yet the beach in front of the hotel is secluded and peaceful.
The abandoned property next door is a blessing and a curse. If construction had been finished then the additional hundreds of rooms nearby would destroy the "secret" feeling of the beach. However, it is an unfortunate eyesore. I do wish Hotel Secreto would add some additional foliage to try to disguise this.
Before our visit I read several negative reviews complaining of musty smell. We were not bothered by it, but definitely saw hints of the underlying problem any time we turned back the temperature on the air conditioning. I am baffled by the decision to carpet the entire building given the climate, if they change this next time they undergo reservations I think they could solve the problem.
Overall we very much enjoyed our stay. The hotel itself probably would not have impressed me much in another location but finding a quiet spot in the ever increasing crowds of Isla Mujeres is really priceless. We would absolutely consider returning in the future.More
