This cathedral was the first one to be constructed on the region on top of a mayan pyramed and using the pyramed stones
The place is simple but the dome roof is beautiful
In the heart of the historic town you just can not miss it

A very plain interior with very high ceilings. Not much to look at - the history is more interesting but you do need a guide to draw out the story.

We were very impressed by the architecture and interiors of the cathedral, although there are so many similar cathedrals in Europe.

Old churches start to look a lot alike after a while. Get a tour guide to show you this place. There's lots of interesting details beyond the biggest carve piece of wood in the world. The Mayan slave laborers pulled one over on their masters and put 2 Mayan calendars in the cathedral. The doors look original but there not and once you know where to look for the canon ball it and the machine gun fire, the building takes on new meaning. Dig a bit deeper and learn about the falling attendance and how the church is funded now...all very interesting.
