The extremely well organized tour of homes begins with an introduction and history of Merida and the revival of the centro all held in the cool and charming courtyard of the library. The large group was split into groups of three which allowed for easy movement in and out of the homes. Owners were present to give introductions and to chat with visitors. There was a fine variety ranging from modest to luxury and even included one under renovation. Highly recommended.

The Merida English Language Library offers these tours November thru March, every Tuesday from 9-noonish. A tour guide explains a bit of the history of Merida to set the stage for the tour. Attendees are divided into groups (30 in our group...there were 3 groups each with a guide) Three types of homes were shown to us: one just being remodeled, one which had been in move in condition with minor decorating changes, and a third which had been completely remodeled according to the strict guidelines of the Historical Code. (First one or two rooms must remain historically accurate, which allows the beautiful tile work to be salvaged!)

The only reason I didn't give this 5 stars is to leave room for the fact that the weather is HOT and the walking distance is a bit arduous on arthritic knees (as mine are). Also care needs to be taken walking on uneven sidewalks, holes and high curbs. I thoroughly enjoyed the tour however! Our guide was excellent, group friendly....and the library anterior tree covered patio is a lovely spot to relax before heading off to other adventures.

I have been on the MEL Tour of Homes many times over the past 10 years and have always enjoyed the diversity of homes included. This morning's tour, however, was very disappointing. All three houses were lackluster and poor examples of the magnificent architectural restorations happening in Merida. The emphasis appeared to be on ordinary homes for sale or vacation rentals, rather than on showcasing the artistic renovations that would inspire visitors to our city. The introduction was non-professional and organization of the group lacking. MEL would be smart to limit the number included in any group, hire professional speakers and most importantly, to show only quality examples of architectural restoration. This does not necessarily mean huge and/or expensive; just quality, which is definitely NOT what we saw on today's tour. February 14, 2017

What an excellent way to learn about the restoring all around in Merida Centro! It was very well attended when we were there so split into 3 groups of 12-15. Brent did a great job of teaching the history of the architecture and building of the old city and the houses we saw (4 in all) had each been lovingly restored, yet modern and comfortable. We learned so much and George and Evelyn who lead our group were both passionate and knowledgeable about the history in the area. This is well worth doing every week!!

The tour is different every week, three homes each time. Depending on the speaker, you learn different things about Merida each time you attend. Such fun to see homes from different eras and what has been done to them.
