If you can live without the sea view than Posada Yum Kin is a must. In Tulum you either overpay for medium condition over the beach or can have a much better room/service and food near the Tulum centre. Posada from the latter is the best. Great rooms (with kitchen), nice garden, hammocks and even a small waterfall. The breakfast is really tasty and the service kind and helpful. If it wasn't for the location (a car is a must) and the price in general (Tulum is really expensive when comparing to other regions) it would have been a steal :)
Do pay a visit.

My family and I spent two nights at Tita Tulum on the beach, which was very nice but windy and pretty expenisive (160 or so a night). A third night was not available, so we were lucky enough to find PYK - and as we were driving we too became a little concerned as we left town and hit a dirt road. When that dirt road turned to potholes and we were surrounded by nothing but what must be the poorest part of Tulum, we became even more skeptical.
Until we arrived at PYK.
Then, everything instantly changed.
Not only were we greeted by Dan, the owner, but an incredibly friendly staff that introduced us to the lush private gardens of his hotel - really a great labor of love for him that he started with his wife 7 years ago. He missed no attention to detail, and the rooms are extremely comfortable and the hotel itself just spot on. My kids (two daughters ages 8 and 12) were won over instantly by Dan's own children - and we knew within minutes that we had discovered a one of a kind destination. Highly recommended. Here's what we did in Tulum:
- Snorkling in 3 Cenotes (Cenotes Escondido, Grand Cenotes and one other) that are not to be missed. Suggest you get a guide for this through local dive shop as they know all the great secret caves. Amazing.
- Tulum Ruins at night: What can you say except magical.
- Sian Kaan: A little expensive for a family of four, so we just drove in and visited the visitor's center, which is nice. Go up top to the perch to get a view of the lagoons.
- Lots of time on the beach. Go get lunch or breakfast at Tita Tulum then hang out there all day and walk up and down the beack.
- North of Tulum towards Cancun is an amazing beach called Akumal. Grab your snorkling gear and swim out in front of the life guard station and float. You will most likely swim with huge freindly sea turtles if you do this. An experience of a lifetime.
- It was Easter Holy week, so we went to church in Tulum. Great local flavor.

Overall - incredible. Make PYK your base and go have an amazing vacation.

Coastal Yucatan is wonderful and so is the town of Tulum. The spectacular, multi-colored vibrant blue waters and the Mayan ruins are reason enough to visit this area. We spent two wonderful days and nights there at the end of March. Because we were spending the next week on the water at nearby Isla Cozumel we wanted an "in-town" experience in Tulum. We are so grateful we came across Posada Yum Kin and booked there! (It was all done easily on-line). This iintimate hotel is a beautiful part of our Yucatan memories. It's tucked away on the edge of town in an area that is just beginning to develop. Once inside the gates we felt we were in another world.
Upon our arrival about 6:00 pm we were warmly greeted by owner/operator Belvina, who went out of her way to welcome us and to make our stay delightful and personal. Posada Yum Kin is a labour of love for Belvina and her husband. We asked for and were allowed a peek of several of the 8 rooms - each is unique, spacious, inviting, and comfortable. Their personal touch and vision for a "green hotel" is everywhere, from solar panels to a windmill. Our room (#1) was just awesome - a complete kitchen, sitting areas, two comfy beds, a veranda with a hammock, a walk-in shower, towels and beach towels. It was ultra-clean, very quiet and private and we felt completely safe and at home. When the sun went down we felt cocooned away in a very special oasis.
We opted for the breakfast package, which was about 70 pesos per person - it was a fantastic start to our day - fresh squeezed juice, organic coffee, huge fruit trays, eggs, waffles! (That must be where the Yum part of their name comes from!)
We found that a taxi ride to town was best for our needs (about 30 Pesos one way). We were impressed by some of the restaurants - especially El Mariachi - where we enjoyed excellent food, beverages, and service! Tulum has most services readily available.
One day we will return to Tulum and for sure we will want to stay at Posada Yum Kin!

I stayed at Posada Yum Kin for a much needed break from the harsh winter in New York, and I couldn't have asked for anything better. Since it was such a short stay, I had to maximize my R&R time, and staying in the lush and quiet environment that Posada Yum Kin provided was just what I needed. We were extremely impressed by the love and attention to detail that went into building the place, every corner contained it's very own unique character. Todd from Wisconsin was a great host and everyone who worked there were very accomodating to our needs. You get much more than you pay for!

Posada Yum Kin is a little off the beaten path in Tulum. It's sort of on the outskirts, away from the beach. My friend and I were slightly skeptical as we drove up to the place, but once we walked inside the gate we knew we were home. The lush interior courtyard is gorgeous and our room was amazing, with a full kitchen, a sitting area, hammocks, wifi, everything you could want. The staff was great (Hi Dan), making sure we had everything we needed, recommending restaurants in town, and smoking a nice cigar with us in the evening. Even the coffee they put out in the morning is delicious.

It's also not bad to be away from the beach. You can explore during the day and go out at night before returning to your own little oasis. Pretty much all the beaches in Tulum are privately owned, so we explored the ruins (which have a great public beach) and then went down to the preserve just south of town.

My buddy and I stayed here two nights, but after 15 minutes we asked if we could extend our reservation. Sadly they were all booked up and we had to press on. I can't wait to go back, though.
