I admit, this was my first "all inclusive" but I'll never do one again. Food is always mediocre, long lines to get a drink at the pool. Slow service. There is no "bar" other than the pool bar at this hotel. To have a pre-dinner drink you have to sit in the lounge area and pray that someone comes to wait on you - it doesn't happen. If it does, you better tip good the first time around or you'll never get a second drink. They have ONE cocktail waitress for 20 or more tables. If they do finally come around you have to wait about 10-15 minutes for your drinks to arrive as they put in everyones order and then bring them all out on large trays. We wanted a night cap after dinner one night and sat at the table from 10:00 until 10:25 and never were we approached by a cocktail waitress. Much faster to go into the dance club and get a drink than to wait to be served outside. Also note that there are different levels or rooms. We were on the 3rd floor and it was very noisy from both the pool music and the clanking of dishes on the lobby floor as they set up for breakfast, lunch and dinner buffets. We were in room 334 and our view was blocked by palm tree and the noise coming up through the atrium and the stacking of plates was horrendous (especially at 5 a.m.). My friends had rooms that were higher up like floor 10 and 11 and they had much nicer mattresses and sheets and extras in their room that we didnt. The refridgerator in most rooms are not cold at all. No way to adjust it either. The Don Q restaurant was good but forget it if you don't have a reservation - they won't take you even if they are not full.
The cleanliness of the pool area was not great. The first day I arrived (sun), I discovered feces on the pool deck - probably came out of a diaper as there were lots of hispanic toddlers running around without proper swim attire on. Drinks from the pool bar were just okay. Nice to be free but beer was warm and the pina coladas came out of a spigot. They were always watery instead of icy. Oh and if you're a wine drinker as I am - you may as well forget about it - their wine was complete swill. Not even drinkable in my book.

Was just an okay place - location was good right across from the flea markets and shops. Marina area was dead this year - nothing going on and overpriced. Next time I will stay in Zihuat.

Room Tip: get a room on the higher levels or at least about level 5. Rooms on 3rd floor were very noisy from pool and buffet below in the lobby

Nice beachfront property, definitely older, but still quite nice. Older crowd with few children, plenty of pool and beach front loungers. The food is okay, but we did eat out a few evenings for better fare (Los Morales is delicious and very reasonably priced). We heard people rave about seafood dishes, but we don't eat shellfish so I can't knowledgeably comment. My husband said the wines were quite nice. The beds and pillows are really comfortable, linens very clean and giant bath towels are great, we used the robes too, which were heavy with quality. Pay the extra for oceanview, it's a beautiful bay dotted with several rugged islands. If it's low season, do the upgrade on site and go to the 'premium' level. You get higher rooms (flrs 10-12), wi-fi, late check-out, and the VIP lounge with premium imported liquor. These rooms also have high end flat screen TV and DVD players. There's a selection of movies to borrow in the lounge. Watch out in the shower, while there is plenty of hot water, it does like to change temperature from icy to scalding and back throughout the whole experience. Toiletries provided even include a sewing kit, q-tips, mouthwash, razor and foamy!! Haven't seen that, even in a 5-star, in a while.
Shows are loud!!! Unbearably loud, and although the female singer is good, it's repetitive and not for kids. We watched a movie in our room each night. The property is clean as are the pools. We found the resort staff very friendly and had a very nice, relaxing vacation. We weren't once approached for timeshare even on our daily long walks on the beach. 3p.m. is feeding time for the alligators that live in the river that runs through the golf course. Walk almost to the south end of the beach and cut through to the golf course by the blue sun huts, the path to the right and the bridge will give you a safe view. The restaurant to the west feeds them raw chicken...it's quite a sight. Baby turtles are released from their hatchery on the beach in front of the hotel, each evening at 6, if they're ready. Ask in the VIP lounge, if there are any that day. It's a seasonal event so don't rely on it.
My 9 and 12yr old children really enjoyed themselves here as they really just want a decently warm pool and edible food. Even Mamma swam daily. And if 'Mamma ain't happy, ain't nobody happy'. Mamma's happy :-)

Room Tip: Gardenview rooms are directly above the shows which are ridiculously loud but over by 10:30 usually. All floors are marked 'non-smoking' which has no meaning what-so-ever.

We just returned from a week of fun. The Barcelo is a great value for your $. The pool is perfect with a swimup bar staffed with fun bartenders/staff. The beach is steps away to powder sand, perfect, and loved the beach messages just steps away (only $25/hr). The food was as expected at an all inclusive, not too flavorful, but good. However, we had did not like the steak, very fatty, even at Sunsets and Don Quijte. Sanca was a fun place to dance and end the evenings. Carlos at the adventures desk was very helpful with Deep Sea Fishing (a must) and other tours. They could use better music at the pool though :) A tip: you need to get up EARLY (6:15-6:30) to reserve prime lounge chairs poolside. Place your towel on back of chair and then go back to bed!

Room Tip: The higher up the better views

First of all, if you are worried about going to Mexico you will likely be fine unless you do something foolish like get drunk and wander around by yourself at night. Help this country and it's people by visiting and tipping!
Hotel is very clean, check in and out is seamless, beach is perfect (smooth sand and very long- like 2-3 miles), breakfast and lunch is great- some suppers could be better. We ate at the sunset a la carte twice and it was excellent both times. Other guests told us the Don Quixote was slow. The inside buffet for supper is not the greatest.
Staff is very happy and hard working. They will do anything they can if you ask them. As an example of the class of people they have working there, I left our safe wide open one day and everything was there when we got back that night.
There is an Oxxo across the street (mini mart), and a host of places within easy walk of the hotel. The hotel does charge for Internet (which is pretty bush league), but if you walk along the main street there are a couple of Wi Fi places that you can use for buying a tea or coffee. Walk down the street on the other side from the hotels to just before the street curves and you will see both places (past the InterContinental).
If you need to phone home, buy a Ladatel card at the Oxxo and use the payphone in the lobby of the hotel.
We got pesos from our local CAA office, or you can use the bank machine at the bank across the street.
Great place, unfortunately some loud drunk people making pigs of themselves, but you can avoid them if you want. Try the quiet pool to the left of the pool bar as you look at the ocean.
This was our second visit in three years and we would return. We only paid $1200 each and we got great value for that money. We tipped about 20 pesos for every meal, the maid, and for some drinks.
You will see some army guys wandering around with automatic weapons, but this is a show of force and is meant to protect us tourists. I hope this country can get this drug situation under control and keep working it's way up the ladder. Beautiful country and people.

First of all, the location is terrific, the lobby area is beautiful, and there is easy access to the beach and pool area. Lots of nice lounge chairs. Service was excellent when you asked for something, but not much was offered. The room was very clean, but the bathroom was very dated with a wall dispenser of soap and shampoo (never could tell which was which, so I bought some shampoo and used the bars of soap from the sink). The bed was comfortable, but there was no blanket other than the polyester bedspread. You can get a (VERY) tiny balcony or a king sized bed, but not both. The cafe next to the pool was very good, but the buffet wasn't. A wonderful trip, but won't stay there again.
