This was our 4th year in a row @ the Barcelo in Ixtapa...We love the e-a-s-e of its location, first and foremost...The place is very clean & always has been. The food is fairly good most of the time @ the buffets, we always found something, but would strongly recommend using your 'specialty restaurant' tickets as they are very nice & totally different than the buffets. (Jumbo butterfly shrimp, rib eyes, etc. @ the Sunset Terrace, order off a menu, with the salad bar - book the 7pm seating - beautiful sunset!) Don Quixote was very good too, don't miss the Spanish coffee - even if you don't like coffee!! (9pm was too late to have such a rich meal...) The burgers @ the swim up bar are pretty 'leg kickin' too. Have one of those about 3pm, good to go...We're foodies & we've been very content w/ the vittles available. We love breakfast @ the LaPalapa - staring @ the water, hi Philly! - it doesn't get any better for those of us who left home w/ over a foot of snow on the ground!!! Good coffee...what a way to go...Off to the pool for the day...Swim up bar opens @ 11am - and those guys work their butts off 'til it closes @ 6. Watch them! (I think they serve food 'til 5pm??) Most days we had waiters/waitresses @ the pool...Some days not?? Don't know what was up with that? When we had them, they were GREAT! Remembered what we were drinking after 1 order! YES! Bring an insulated mug, don't fight it...It's warm down there & drinks melt - FAST! Blue eyed Roberto and the boys @ the swim up bar were FAB! Done @ the pool? Stop @ the Sanca Bar @ 6pm, have one & take one up to your room..."Junior's" team was working the Sanca this month & they were AWESOME! Don't miss karaoke nite @ the Sanca...It's CRAZY! OMG! The house band gets old, but they were fun early in the 10 day vacation...(How that chick can sing that one song for over 10 min.??? Yikes!) Venture out to eat tho...you gotta go to Frank's. Have the "bacon wrapped cheese stuffed grilled jumbo prawns" - Franks' Zappetizer. You get 2 & can split them with a fellow foodie. The pizzas are very good there too - wood stove - but no sausage, only pepperoni?? Thin crust...We also went to Luna's for grilled lobster - kitty corner from Senor' Frogs...We made pigs of ourselves, 2# of lobster for each, of the 4 of us!! We recommend not using their melted butter as it SUCKED! (We're from WISCONSIN!!) But the lobster was good w/out it...Sisco was our server & he was wonderful! I had the biggest Bacardi Limon & diet Coke w/ lime that I ever had in my LIFE! Mmmm...Sisco recommended we put the meal on our credit card as the exchange rate was better, & he was right...Very accommodating, got to watch the Senor' Frogs craziness...(The Blue Shots aren't bad there either.)
Now the things that bugged us...
The plumbing in the rooms need a MAJOR facelift...everything is very clean, but you never know what's up with the water? And that hasn't changed for us in 4 years...The elevators still suck. Quite a wait @ key times of the day...The smoking policy has changed drastically @ the Barcelo...Good for most, but for those of us who have always enjoyed going to Mexico to NOT get yelled at.... the Barcelo has restrictions...It turned out fine, but was unexpected. We e-mailed the hotel prior to our arrival (using the e-mail address on their website) with our "ocean view - above the 6th floor, please" request) & were disappointed that they had not received it?? They did accomodate us with an 8th floor room - ocean view, after a bit of a haggling. We were not disappointed with the room nor view. OMG! The room frig leaves alot to be desired...Ours got cold after the 5th day. (We called.) No more "frig snacks to buy." A tip will get your frig re-filler guy to load yours up with what you want/don't want. And if that is all we have to "complain" about in our 4th, 10 day stay, that's pretty good!!
The really good???
The weather...we had a cloud for about 2 min. in 10 days!!!!!!!!!
The service. From the bellboys to the cab callers to the gals that clean the swim up bar latrines all the time...Horray! And smiling! Even the maintenace guys that were re-grouting the floor in front of the elevators @ 4 in the morning...Smilin'!!
Deal w/ the guys on the beach for goodies...they are good people & their prices are fair...Have a massage for an hour and 15 min. @ the massage hut on the beach...$25. Listen to the ocean & smile when you think what you would pay @ home...Zihu is fun but too hot in the afternoon...Don't be surprised by the Mexican police @ nite, they've got issues right now - & don't be a fool & go to an ATM @ nite also. We do our Kahlua/Marlboro shopping @ the grocery store in Ixtapa, Scruples. Marlboros are $21.50 a carton...you can do better in Zihu, but it's right there! Roberto's is our fave silver shop in Ixtapa. But DO barter, they'll come down. Their stuff is class...The guys outside the hotel aren't bad for jewelry either...We've been happy with what we bought....The theme nites aren't a big deal for us...we've seen them. (Daffy Duck's butt freaked us out this year! Was great seeing Javier tho!) If you must go...do the Mexican Fiesta on Wed. nite. The colors are awesome!
But vacations can be good/bad with the people you meet/deal with...we met some great/goofy people from Bismarck, ND - Vancouver/Vancouver Island - Bemidji, MN...Alot of regulars go the same time every year...It's nice to see familiar faces...Hey Janet, Brian, Bob w/ an R, Bridget, Carmen, & Cindy....hope to see you next year! We TOTALLY missed our fave bartender, Cesar, who is rumored to be working @ the Melia'. He's the Barcelo's loss, believe me!!

My husband and I visited Ixtapa last year for our 20th wedding anniversay and loved the area so much that we returned this March with another couple. We stayed at the Barcelo this year and were very impressed! The resort was rated as a 3.5 - 4 star but we felt like we were at a 5.5 star resort. We have stayed at 5.5 star resorts in the Mayan and the Barcelo was just as good in all aspects. It was extremely clean, the rooms were beautiful (incredible view!), the beds were comfortable, food was awesome and the service was exceptional. The lounge areas and dining areas were large and comfortable. A great assortment at the buffet and excellent a la carte meals. The house red wine was really good, the bar boose was a little better quality than most all inclusive resorts. We never had a problem getting a palapa although we were up early to get a front row view of the beach. A large pool area and swim up bar. I would not hesitate to recommend this resort to anyone & we will definitely go back!

Just got back from the Barcelo Ixtapa. The hotel was great, the beach was exceptional and the staff always very helpful. Gabriel, Carman and others at the front desk were always very helpful as were the dudes at the curb getting us taxis and telling us where to go. We needed some maintenance work done on our shower - Manuel worked on it until it was fixed right - good job Manuel. Our room was always cleaned on time. The beach was never overcrowded. We were there just as spring break was starting and we saw no college kids partying anywhere. Someone told me they wont let the college crowd in here - don’t know how true this may be, but the stay was very subdued except on the Friday and Saturday of our stay many Mexican nationals began arriving with their kids. Kids were a bit uncontrolled, but I had small kids once too. The kids are there too have fun too and its their country - us Gringos are guests.. They offer very good in house entertainment nightly which was better than any other place we have stayed while in Mexico - Gabriella does a great job arranging the entertainment. We found the Spa staff very friendly also. The only complaint I would have would be the food. I have been to other Mexican resorts and I always forget how boring the food gets after a few days in an all-inclusive. We will return here, but next time I will be eating out. There are many nice restaurants just across the street from the resorts that are safe and easy to get to. We found Franks to be a very nice place for food and free music. Frank is a Canadian and his wife is a Mexican. They will make sure you are as comfortable as they can make you. For the adventuresome, Zihuatanejo is the neighboring little fishing village. This little town reflects the real Mexico. About 70 pesos cab fare ($5) and you step into a whole new environment. We felt perfectly safe there and found wonderful little restaurants on the beach and beer for a $1/bottle. My advice is to get Pesos at the bank at a 15.45 to $1 exchange to buy items. Many places only will give you between 10 and 13 pesos on the dollar otherwise. The hotels of course are the worse offenders for this. But if you go to Ixtapa, visiting Zihuatanejo should be high on your list of things to do.

my parents have been treating my brother, myself and our spouses to a Mexican trip for the last four years...this year we choose Ixtapa and were thrilled with our choice. The Barcelo was an okay hotel (not quite as elegant as some of our previous hotels) but more than adequate. Food was good and night shows were well done. However, the town of Ixtapa is beautiful and the beach was great. If you wanted to go out for the evening there were a lot of little resturants to choose from and they were all starving to have people come and eat at their place. The a la carte has a dress code of pants for men and they stick to it...we saw them turn away a few men.

We love this area. The hotel is clean. Lots of choices for food. Staff are so nice and most work very hard and quickly to make sure you are looked after. The rooms are nice, clean. The king size bed is comfy.
This is a wonderful holiday area, never rains and is always around 30 degrees. The sunsets are spectacular.
Lots to do
