My husband and I visited Ixtapa last year for our 20th wedding anniversay and loved the area so much that we returned this March with another couple. We stayed at the Barcelo this year and were very impressed! The resort was rated as a 3.5 - 4 star but we felt like we were at a 5.5 star resort. We have stayed at 5.5 star resorts in the Mayan and the Barcelo was just as good in all aspects. It was extremely clean, the rooms were beautiful (incredible view!), the beds were comfortable, food was awesome and the service was exceptional. The lounge areas and dining areas were large and comfortable. A great assortment at the buffet and excellent a la carte meals. The house red wine was really good, the bar boose was a little better quality than most all inclusive resorts. We never had a problem getting a palapa although we were up early to get a front row view of the beach. A large pool area and swim up bar. I would not hesitate to recommend this resort to anyone & we will definitely go back!

Just got back from the Barcelo Ixtapa. The hotel was great, the beach was exceptional and the staff always very helpful. Gabriel, Carman and others at the front desk were always very helpful as were the dudes at the curb getting us taxis and telling us where to go. We needed some maintenance work done on our shower - Manuel worked on it until it was fixed right - good job Manuel. Our room was always cleaned on time. The beach was never overcrowded. We were there just as spring break was starting and we saw no college kids partying anywhere. Someone told me they wont let the college crowd in here - don’t know how true this may be, but the stay was very subdued except on the Friday and Saturday of our stay many Mexican nationals began arriving with their kids. Kids were a bit uncontrolled, but I had small kids once too. The kids are there too have fun too and its their country - us Gringos are guests.. They offer very good in house entertainment nightly which was better than any other place we have stayed while in Mexico - Gabriella does a great job arranging the entertainment. We found the Spa staff very friendly also. The only complaint I would have would be the food. I have been to other Mexican resorts and I always forget how boring the food gets after a few days in an all-inclusive. We will return here, but next time I will be eating out. There are many nice restaurants just across the street from the resorts that are safe and easy to get to. We found Franks to be a very nice place for food and free music. Frank is a Canadian and his wife is a Mexican. They will make sure you are as comfortable as they can make you. For the adventuresome, Zihuatanejo is the neighboring little fishing village. This little town reflects the real Mexico. About 70 pesos cab fare ($5) and you step into a whole new environment. We felt perfectly safe there and found wonderful little restaurants on the beach and beer for a $1/bottle. My advice is to get Pesos at the bank at a 15.45 to $1 exchange to buy items. Many places only will give you between 10 and 13 pesos on the dollar otherwise. The hotels of course are the worse offenders for this. But if you go to Ixtapa, visiting Zihuatanejo should be high on your list of things to do.

my parents have been treating my brother, myself and our spouses to a Mexican trip for the last four years...this year we choose Ixtapa and were thrilled with our choice. The Barcelo was an okay hotel (not quite as elegant as some of our previous hotels) but more than adequate. Food was good and night shows were well done. However, the town of Ixtapa is beautiful and the beach was great. If you wanted to go out for the evening there were a lot of little resturants to choose from and they were all starving to have people come and eat at their place. The a la carte has a dress code of pants for men and they stick to it...we saw them turn away a few men.

We love this area. The hotel is clean. Lots of choices for food. Staff are so nice and most work very hard and quickly to make sure you are looked after. The rooms are nice, clean. The king size bed is comfy.
This is a wonderful holiday area, never rains and is always around 30 degrees. The sunsets are spectacular.
Lots to do

If you are looking for a hotel with scads of people, pool volleyball and sloshing drinks – this is the location for you. We were looking for romance, tranquility and private time. This was the wrong spot. Located in the heart of tourist-ville, there were people everywhere you looked. It was clean, has a welcoming lobby and within walking distance to everything. But its your typical American destination and with a little effort, you can find something better. We particularly liked Las Brisas.
