Saigon has the best sushi in town, Inwas told, which immediately raised my suspicions. A Thai restaurant serving sushi? But so it was in this trendy restaurant which filled up reasonably as the night went on. We tried a variety of Thai curries and sushi dishes and all were given the thumbs-up. And for those who chose postres, the local speciality of a little cake with a molten chocolate centre drew approving hmmms!

When in Rome, I eat Italian, when in Mexico... but there I was and being very familiar with Vietnamese food, and upon José Luis's recommendation, we went to check it out. The restaurant is beautiful and the decor very modern, the furnishings super "deluxe", the crowd not just upper-middle class, but beyond. The entrance leads to a large, well lit, enclosed "fishbowl" porch at the very front, with more dining areas inside. The menu is fantastic: Vietnamese, Chinese and Japanese specialties (Pho, spring rolls, fried rice, pork dumplings, gyoza, sushi, etc...all done with a Mexican twist, plus any Mexican dish you'd ever want with an Asian flair. We ordered tapas and local beer: fresh shitake mushrooms and beef fajitas in "tiger's milk", ceviche and fried chicken gyozas. Then came a sweet and sour barbacoa and tacos de lengua, all perfectly cooked and seasoned. Service was outstanding even when the place got packed, after 8 pm. JL's new girlfriend arrived with her auntie and we spent a terrific evening enjoying totally creative cuisine and very, very fine house-exclusive Tequila. After 9 pm the place thinned out and we began to notice all the young, affluent, gay men around us. This is a very positive sign of the times since homosexuality is still subject to public condemnation and persecution in provincial Mexico and here was an obvious hang-out, albeit only for the well to do. Again, we closed the joint, paid well over $250.00 USD. and had to take taxis home but well worth it!
