Our family of four spent a week at the Barcelo Maya Beach. The resort is very large and there is no shortage of things to do. Snorkeling at the pier was a lot of fun, the beach was beautiful, and there were plenty of chairs. We alternated between the beach and pool each day. I especially enjoyed the hammocks around the pool.
The food at the buffets was good. I looked forward to a mimosa and omelete each morning. The hamburgers at the snack huts were really good. My daughter topped it off with an ice cream cone most days. The spanish restaurant was better than the mexican ala carte restaurant.
We made a trip into Playa one night to shop and spend time at Senior Frogs. Drinks were expensive, but the atmosphere was a lot of fun. It was fun watching people get up and dance on stage.
This is our second trip to Mexico. Both times to Barcelo resorts and both times we were very pleased. The beach in Riveria Maya was much better than Puerto Vallarta.

My sister and I are in our early twenites and attended this resort from April 15-20th, 2012. We had an absolutely amazing time from the beginning until the end.

We flew through Westjet which was smooth sailing. Upon our arrival it was quick and easy to find our bus and we were at the resort in an hour, the drive is not bad at all, straight highway.

When we arrived, we were checked in quickly and were able to get into our rooms right at Check In time. The front desk staff was helpful, although you have to ask where things are as they don't explain on their own, but were happy to help.

Our room was nice, standard room that you would get, we did not pay extra. We were very close to the beach, which was awesome for us and what we requested. A light was out when we got there and maintenence was there within 10 minutes to change it for us!~ We found the beds to be comfy, much comfier then other resorts we have stayed out!~ Good spacious room, fridge always full!

You pay for what you get people, if you want the 5 star resort with all of the restaurants pay for it in the first place and go to the palace. It is a very large resort but if you look at it before you go you will realize this as it is 5 resorts in one!~ We were at the Beach resort and stayed mostly on ours, besides going for long walks along the beach as we knew ahead of time of its size and what it would offer staying at the Beach. yes it is more if you want more restaurants but again do your research and pay for what you get :)~

The food was amazing, my sister and I are picky eaters and we always had something great to eat and our plates were filled. Lots of selection and good variety. We ate at the Mexican and Spanish restaurant and both were delicious!!~ No complaints about food or drink. The beach has a buffet right on it, and a tap where you can pour your own beer and drinks, you dont even have to order one, the tap is literally facing you right off the bar!!~ Good variety of drinks, we paid regular price, no extras.

The beach was beautiful, lovely sand and blue water, very clear!! It can get a bit rocky if you go our far enough so I would suggest water shoes~ But amazing beach we spent most of our time there and in the water~ Lots of activities going on around the resort, you can always keep busy with basketball, mini putt, golf, theres a little mini shopping center right in the resort which was great with decent prices. Also there is a disco which is like a club at night so we enjoyed that~

Overall it was a lot of families and couples, with a few groups of younger people but it was quiet enough for us and really enjoyed our time there~

My only recommendation is doing your research before you go and pay for what you want so you are not dissapointed, we paid bottom and were very happy with the services and food so it really comes down to how picky you are~

Great vacation, would definitely return and look forward to doing so!!

Room tip: We were in the Coba building closet to the beach, if you prefer to be closer to the beach you should suggest it as the builings are very long, so you are either near the buffet or the beach!!~

The Barcelo is more like a small city than a resort. It is five resorts in one where you pick (pay for) the level of quality you wish to have. Each rung on the Barcelo ladder gets you better food, more restaruant choices, and more beverage choices. However, unless you are at the very top of the ladder (the Palace) you don't get the good alcohol (just rail drinks). In addition there are no waiters on the beach and no food on the beach. You must go to the restaurants to eat and you must go to the bar yourself to order your drinks. It's just annoying.

Also, it is sooooo crowded. If you are on the lower end of the ladder (the Beach or the Caribe) you are surrounded by partying spring-breakers and families looking for an economical get-a-way. We were on the second highest rung, but the rest of our travel group was on the second lowest rung (we were upgraded due to lack of rooms). Well, the upgrade didn't matter because if we wanted to eat with our group we had to drop down two levels. In addition, you could only make reservations for restaurants at the level where you were at - so when we thought we were all eating at the steak house it turned out we were set up for two different venues.

It was such a hassle, way too big, long walks to anywhere - I would never go back. To make it worse, the beds were HARD as rocks and the sheets were terrible quality and didn't "breathe" at all. You'd wake up sweating and uncomfortable. Yuck. No R&R at this place.

Room tip: If you go here, choose the Palace option or you'll be irritated.

Hi all!

My boyfriend and me went to this hotel in the end of February. We spent a week in Puerto Aventuras and were really happy with our stay.

First of all, the territory is huge! And really beuatiful. It's green, it's nicely decorated. We loved the beach. It was big with nice white sand which didn't get hot in the sun! The entrance in the water was sandy, though with a few rocks which I personaly don't like. But again, there were just a few and you could find a spot without them at all. There are many palm-trees on the beach, so you can lie in the shade if you want. The beach was not crowded, we could find a place there even at noon.

The staff in the hotel is extremely nice. They don't bother you with extra attention (like in Egypt for example...), they just make your stay comfortable and memorable. They never made it explicit that they want tips or anything. We found that nice and professional :)

We had a nice clean room on the 3d floor of the Tulum building, it wasn't too big but wasn't small either. You don't have any extra space for playing football, but you have more than enough space to spend a week. The room service was good, they left candies :)

Also they have AMAZING shows in the hotel theatre. I really enjoyed them! Singers and dancers are professionals there, not just a team of animators performing.

The food was abundant and tasty. They had a couple of speciall evenings of Spanish/Mexican and other cuisines. I didn't like their a-la-cart restaurants though, especially seafood.. They didn't seem to differ from the usual buffet and you had to make a reservation almost on the day of your arrival.

The location of the hotel is good. It is situated near main sights (except Chicen Itza). We visited Coba, Xplor, Tulum and Zel-Ha. Loved all the places! Xpolr is especially great for families with kids but is fun for a couple as well. Zel-Ha is really beautiful with ,any interesting activities like snorkling, swimming with dolphins, etc. Coba is the last pyramid you can actually climb and that's the place where the stone with the inscriptions about 2012 was found. Tulum is a beautiful city on the sea shore, sights are amazing! Another amazing attraction of Mexico are cenotes. There are three just across the road of the gotel. Tourists don't usually go their, it's more of a place for the locals. But we went there on our own and found that that was one of the most amazing things we saw in Mexico! there were not many people there and we could swim in the water of those caves. The experience was just unique..

We loved our stay in the hotel and in Mexico in general and will go again!

Room tip: Don't take the room near the Theatre Kukulkan, it's sooo noisy in the evening when it's the show time. But if you like noise, it's fine :)

We stayed from April 6-14th. This was our second time for my wife and I, and our two boys ages 13 and 15, to the Mayan Riviera region, but our first to the Barcelo. We all had an excellent time with everything. Food was good to very good in the buffets. They work hard to keep it stocked up and the selection was large. Usually had lunch at the beach buffet for convenience which was great. Had 4 a la cartes, Mexican, Spanish, Steak and Seafood and thoroughly enjoyed all of them. Heard good things about the Japanese and Brazilian, but we already had 4 booked, and there was an extra cost for them anyways.
The beach is beautiful!! The ocean was warm and although a little wavy, easy to swim in. The snorkelling off the end of the pier was a blast. Seeing the walls of fish underneath the pier was cool. Also, saw and took a video of a sea turtle and couple stingrays.
We only used a couple of pools closer to our end of the resort, and they were clean, large and nice to swim in. Never really a problem to find a couple chairs either on the beach or by the pools.
Room was a standard room on the second floor of the Coba building. Maybe a 3 minute walk to the pool and a 3 minute walk to the lobby. Firm beds, but comfortable, clean, nice bathroom, really all that I needed. Room service did a great job and seemed appreciative of the tips and little gifts that my wife left them.
My wife and boys did the Segway tour on the beach and around the resort. They enjoyed it. They let me ride a Segway for a few minutes before they left, hoping that I would pay and do the tour as well. I didn't, but it was still fun. I would recommend this because it is not something that you can do at home, so it is worth the $35.
Theatre shows in the evenings were very good. Karaoke started slow, but the final few were really good. Circus was really cool. Variety night also very entertaining. The Mexican night I had seen at the last resort, so we skipped out early and did a nice evening walk of the resort. The Couples Challenge night, we actually got to go up on stage. Not sure how entertaining it was too watch, but we had a blast, and actually won. They gave us free henna tattoos, shirts and passes to the VIP lounge.
Overall, the nicest resort we have been too, and we are trying the talk the grandparents, aunts and uncles into doing a family trip here next year. If not, just the 4 of us would gladly come back again.
