Our stay at Barcelo Maya Colonial in Dec 2015 was excellent. We had a very relaxing week. We really enjoyed the new and impressive gym facilities - thanks Arie for wonderful yoga practice. Namaste.
Also a BIG thank you to the wonderful Entertainment Staff: Emy Limon, Esteban, Brian Diddier and Tomas the cat. Love you all. They work hard each day to get us moving and teach us dance moves.
This was our 4th time at this resort and probably not the last. The food is fabulous and we love the cleanliness of the resort.

For us this was a fantastic resort. Lots to do on site and adventures off. Never crowded and beautiful beaches and pools.
Restaurants: Definitely book your A La Carte dinners. We did 4 of them and they were fantastic. The buffets had so many choices there was never a meal you had to eat the same time. Although you will because the pasta and omelet bar are great and the guacamole and Pico du Gallo are fantastic!
Pools: Spot less and gorgeous/beach clean and always lounge chairs and hammocks--water was a little chilly tho
Rooms: Ours was standard but spacious. Clean and comfortable. Other reviews said the rooms smelt bad. Ours was stuffy when we went in the first time but we had no issue with that after we opened the patio door that first day. Rooms were cleaned daily however was later in the day like 4 or 5pm, my personal preference is to have that all done by lunch and not left till the end of the day. TV was big but really only one or 2 channels that were not Spanish so that wasn't so great for us as we don't speak it. Only BAD thing was we each had to pay for WIFI and only one devise at a time could use it--In this day and this age it should be included and open to everyone. I can only get away on these trips because I can stay linked to home and work.
Spa: My experience was the best ! The hydrotherapy regime was fun and invigorating and the massage was just what I needed. Definitely try to get there if you can.
Off Site Adventures: we only went on the one into Playa del Carmen but there were certainly others we visited with that had great adventures.

Had a lot of fun, enjoy the food/restaurant, water sports, shows, daily activities, excursions, room is clean, pool is well maintained, very happy with the service.

Only beach isn't as good as the Barcelo in Panta Cana.

Room Tip: Bring same US$ changes for the tips

We have enjoyed staying at numerous All-Inclusive resort properties on the Riviera Maya but must admit that the Barcelo properties in Puerto Aventuras are, thus far, our top pick. The properties are immaculate, the staff and pools stupendous, and the very loooong and gorgeous beach is totally awesome. We stayed at the Palace our first year there, then at the Colonial for our last trip. It isn't quite as swank as the Palace, but it is absolutely stunning, and we could enjoy our exact same favorite beach for less cost. Our Palace stay afforded us access to 3 other lovely properties. With the Colonial we had access to only 2 other properties, but not the Palace, which we found totally fine as the expanse is humongous. We were pleasantly surprised to find a brand-new, modern, mall area to explore this trip. We were also delighted to learn that many of our wonderful dinner reservations were pre-booked for us, right at some of the fantastic mall restaurants. Another amazing attraction was an added Dolphinarium, where we could enjoy daily dolphin shows for not extra cost. We loved the variety of choices, from where to dine? spend the day at the hammocks, pool or beach? which entertainment venue and nearby attractions? We would have given our stay a 5, however, we have never experienced SPRING BREAKERS in the past, and there were hundreds of them at the resort. Even though the brochure stated, No spring breakers, shame on parents for bringing so many teens along and not watching your charges. The uncontrolled drinking at the All-Inclusive was a major issue, with hundreds of rowdy teens taking over the bar and pool area. We simply moved to the beach, then a less popular pool and bar area. But, seeing the total chaos and lack of control was quite disturbing for seniors and families with young children. During the evening show, we discovered a young person, lying nearby in a drunken stupor. We were alarmed to see his friends tote him away and worried that no adult was even aware of how intoxicated he'd become. This incident really dampened our stay. We do enjoy trying different locations each trip, but finding a comparable property to these Barcelo beauties will be a difficult search.

Room Tip: Lots of walking, so best to reserve per any preference to being nearest to the beach, buffet restaurant, or pool (or bar?).
