“No goats and no signs”
Review of Goat Lick

Reviewed 22 August 2014

I was really looking forward to seeing some goats but unfortunately when we got there was no sign of any.

There was no signs that we spotted identfying when you had got to the Goat lick so the best way of spotting it would be to use a mile by mile guide and work out where it is.

We took the Icefield Parkways (Lake Louis to Jasper) years ago and close to the destination we had our closest encounter of mountain goats. They were three or more white mountain goats scattered on the cliff right beside the highway. Later I found out that it is one of the many attractions in the Parkway called Goat Lick. The mountain goats are licking for mineral which is rich in calcium and sulphate. It was quite fun to watch this born cliff climber to show off their skill. It is hard to miss unless you are the lone car in the parkway and driving very fast. If you are really lucky to be the only car on the road, watchout after you pass Sunwapta Falls inbound to Jasper. It should be around 17km after Sunwapta Falls parking lot. We have seen wild mountain goats in other parks but never like this close. – four stars -
