Owner description: If you spot Ogopogo, the legendary lake monster said to inhabit these waters, you'll make headline news, but other than that, you're sure to enjoy all the recreational activities this 82-mile long lake has to offer: swimming, boating, parasailing and all types of water sports.

Lake Okanagan is one of the primary lakes in the Okanagan Thompson region of B.C. There are loads of public beaches that are free to visit and swim in. The water is clean and clear and much warmer than some other regions in Canada.

We were here in the summer to collect our RV and start a trip to Williams Lake. Kelowna and the lake are very pretty with lots of places to get a good view. Try to get out of the city (lots of strip malls) and on to the east shore. There are many wineries and they generally do a good job of finding a place with a view where you can sample wines.

But I will try. I have lived here for 44 years. I see the lake every day. It is a beautiful thing to see, and a lot of fun to play on. I have owned a boat most of those 44 years. The city is making it harder to launch a small boat by closing down launch sites, and charging a fairly hefty fee to park a truck and trailer at the launch site. Taking that into account, it is still a lot of fun to play on the lake, whether it is an early morning ski at 6 am, or an afternoon of drifting on the lake, visiting with friends, or out with the kids tubing behind the boat!
I have a small tournament boat that does not do well on rough water, so I must always be aware of what the weather is doing! A large lake can be an uncomfortable place if a summer squall produces 4-5 ft waves. Usually short lived, but they can make it impossible to place it back onto the trailer. I guess what I am saying is pay attention while your out there, be courteous, and be safe!!
In the winter, this is a large enough body of water that it usually does not freeze over. In my 44 years, it has only partially frozen over in the mid 80's. And that was just in the calmness of protected bays, and by the bridge.
Lake Okanagan is what makes Kelowna, Vernon and Penticton what they are, and that is a beautiful place to live!!

Wish we could move here! One hundred miles of spectacular beauty and lots of summer outdoor activities. I'd love to see it in the winter.
