“Key Quest - Detention”

Ranked #23 of 67 Fun & Games in Ottawa
Attraction details
Reviewed 13 August 2017

For our summer vacation this year, our family of three decided on a stay-cation and did a bunch of Escape Rooms in Ottawa. We completed 15 "escapes" in 10 days, and had a blast! While discussing our vacation with family/friends, I was asked to rank the rooms in terms of which were our favourites; this is difficulty as each "room" had different elements that were cool or unique. I'll review them chronologically and try my best not to give too many details that will spoil the fun of the puzzles/room. (The overall ranking was based on the gestalt of atmosphere, puzzle quality and fun factor. The lower the number the more we liked it. eg. Rank 1 out of 15, means this was our favourite. Rank 15 of 15, means this was our least favourite.)

KeyQuest - Detention
This was the eleventh escape room we did on vacation. The room was a good size. The lighting was very good. The decor/set dressing was minimal, but the puzzles were varied and good. Our daughter (age 13) liked this room as it was more straight-forward than some of the other ones we've done. (And it's always fun when you can figure out what needs to be done!) This would be a great room for people new to escape rooms to get their feet wet or for families with younger children. Our team of three completed the room with 28 minutes and 28 seconds to spare. Rank 12 out of 15. P.S. We were pleasantly surprised to receive "prizes" for completing the room! Thank you. It'll make a great souvenir! Also thank you to the assistant manger/host who was pleasant and very enthusiastic. Your enthusiasm was contagious!

I've had two birthday parties there and my children have gone to others as well. We've done a few drop ins as well. My six year old daughter was a bit hesitant but only for the first bit.

Quite a disappointing experience: we booked a 9th birthday party at this facility. We asked in advance about the appropriate age and were simply told that kids as young as five used the facility. We asked what the best time would be for our group and we were advised mid afternoon. So we booked a mid-afternoon slot. As it turned out the five-year-olds the staff were referring to must have been quite tall and husky, as the laser-tag equipment is only one size, and that's grown-up sized (we later learned that they had some kid of padding - the kind of thing the staff might have thought about by simply looking at the group). Our group was put together with teenage kids, who looked just as disappointed to be stuck with youngsters. Young (i.e. eight-year-old) kids in our group were pushed around and some did not want to go back for the second game (included in the price). We mentioned this to the staff and were told that earlier in the morning would be better for grouping with younger parties. "Thanks," I didn't say, "Very helpful. Would have been great to know two months ago when we first spoke to you". Arcade games would have been available for those too intimidated to play, but the staff were unable to change a $20 bill to provide coins to play with: "our coin machine is broken" was the line. Party room was very small and very cramped, and there is very little time for set up and take down. In short the business is trying to cram too many people into their surprisingly small (for the all buzz) facility. Staff were generally friendly but it's the organization of this business that left us with a bad taste. Our mistake for booking here, caveat emptor and all that, but would have used another facility had we known what the experience would be like. For grown-ups: the decorations in the facility are rather "home-made" looking and likely not at the top of the industry standard. But there are probably not many competitors in town so have fun.

Headed to Laser Quest this past Sunday with my 12-year-old daughter, foolishly thinking that we would walk in and play a few games. It had been YEARS since we played. Turns out there was a 45-minute wait; not bad. The place was a zoo, but the staff were all pleasant and the place seemed to run very well. 30 minutes after paying,we registered our player names, got our little activator things, then waited for a few minutes to be ushered into the game. After getting clear instructions, our 15-minute game begun. Maze is extensive and we had a lot of fun. Cost is $9/game. We played two games each; total cost was about $40 (with tax).

I took 3 teenagers on a Saturday and we had a blast. Lots of fun, the staff was energetic and super friendly.

Only did 2 games as it does get pricey with a larger group, but still worth it.

Only suggestion would be 20 or 30 minutes games for the price instead of 15 minutes per game.

Still an awesome place for teens.
