Review of Martello Towers

Martello Towers
Ranked #75 of 229 things to do in Quebec City
Attraction details
Reviewed 13 November 2016

There were originally 4 Martello Towers. Tower 1 is on the plains of abraham.
Just north of this tower 1 block from the park is the 2nd tower. it is at the northwest corner of Tache and Wilfrid-Laurier Streets. The 3rd is no more and the 4th is just west of the Rue Philippe-Dorval on the Rue Lavigueur (across from house #169).
The towers were built from 1808 to 1812 and were built to protect quebec from the then american threat to the south.

There are very impressive and easy to find in the park. The walk to them is easy and very pleasant on a beautiful day. The park itself is worth a visit. You should take the Avenue George V in the park for an easier shorter walk from the Citadelle. Don't forget to sit down on one of the many benches to enjoy the park and the magnificent views!

After a rather disappointing visit to the Battlefields Museum which was all rather confusing the visit to the Martello Tower on the same ticket was a revelation. The concept of the towers and how it is now presented using ipads was very impressive. Some of the virtual reality was a bit weak but the commentary putting the tower into context was first rate and thank you for having as proper English Accent making it even more authentic!

OK, so why is a stone tower that used to house a cannon cool? Because, they strap an iPad on you and when you hold it up to numbered markers throughout the tower, you see things that aren't really there! You hear from soldiers' stories, or see what they ate, or how the cannon works. Lots of hands on...kids love it (so did adults)! Totally surprised at how well done the tower tour was. My advice? Do it when you are on the Plains of Abraham! A fun diversion
