When we were greeted, we were instantly told that an arrival at another property had been organised at exactly the same time (extreme inefficiency) so we were simply told the door code and left.
The house was in poor shape - particularly worn carpets and furniture - items like the pool table and cues were unusable and broken. The kitchen appliances were very poor, from an extremely inefficient oven to a fridge that was unbearably noisy (as loud as a washing machine in full cycle). There was rubbish left outdoors. The swimming pool was a crime scene, filled with rubbish - literally - so was not a swimming pool at all (despite this being late April, no effort had been made to prepare the swimming pool and no indication was given that this might be the case). It was truly unsafe to be out there.
Despite leaving the place cleaner than how we found it, they then had the audacity to only return a very small percentage of the deposit, claiming that there was a bit of a stain from squash drink in one room and damage to the swimming pool (despite no one going near the swimming pool because it was such a bomb site and safety hazard). We were only informed of this after weeks and weeks of trying to get them to just reply to us about the deposit. By this time many other guests had of course stayed there, so how on earth could they justifiably complain that any damage (if there really was any) was caused by our group?
Correspondence and efficiency prior to the stay was very poor too.
I've never complained about anything like this online before, so I'm not one of 'those people'. It really felt necessary for this though.

Room Tip: Don't trust them. It appears their supposed dreadful efficiency is in fact a cover for a darker, dishonest plan.

Crikey! We were very dismayed to see this review, as it does not give a fair representation at all.

Unfortunately, as anyone who has ever dealt with the public will understand, for all the many decent customers who pass through our doors, there is the occasional one who harbours a grudge despite all reasonable efforts on our part to be fair. It is just barmy to assert, for example, that the swimming pool is full of rubbish! It isn't, and never has been. Nor do we grow grass that is as dark as charcoal, as the poster of this review would have us all believe if you look at his photograph. The picture shows a red door, a bit of colour on a car, but everything else has been 'doctored' to make is abismally dark. The truth of course is different. Our house is nice, actually, we are trustworthy, and our grass is green! I do hope that you, the reader and potential guest, will recognise this review is twisted.

Sadly the stag group concerned, that visited us in April, caused significant damage by soaking some expensive wallpaper with drink, plus they made holes in the wooden covers for the pool, and left the house a mess. The pool was closed at that time, and out of bounds, so they should not even have been in the pool enclosure. They then spent several weeks denying the damage before admitting it. It is very rare for us to take any of a group's deposit in case of damage, but we did take (less than half) on this occasion. Subsequent groups who have seen the damage have agreed with us that they deserved to pay, but thought we had been too lenient with them.

Please carry on to make your enquiry for accommodation with us, and if this review is playing on your mind, ask our bookings secretary to send you some testimonials from other guests. Please don't let a bitter young man upset you with this unbalanced and innaccurate entry!

great house for a party as there is lots of space but don't expect any sort of luxury as its stuck in an 80's time warp. For the money we paid I would have expected a better standard through out.

there was supposed to be someone there to greet us but they didn't show up until late that evening - not a problem for us as we are intelligent chaps who managed to figure out how everything in the house worked but others may not appreciate being left in the dark so to speak.

As one previous reviewer mentioned, the red room did indeed feel like a youth centre and seemed like it would be more appropriate for a swingers party as the decor is not too appealing.

The kitchen and dining room were good, nice and spacious...as were the bedrooms.

The village was good with some friendly local pubs.

Great house for a party but not necessarily for a holiday.

My other bug bear is that they took a damage deposit from us in cash and they still have not returned the money (over a month later) despite several calls and emails. They did confirm that there was no damage so that isn't the issue.

On the whole it was a very average experience in terms of the accommodation (we did have a good party though!!)

We needed a location for a 30th birthday party which was big enough for our party of 20 people and where we could make as much noise as we liked without annoying the neighbours. Cholwell Hall provided just that. This venue is extremely spacious, well maintained and provided everything we needed for the perfect party.

We were shown around the house on arrival by the owner (I think) which took about 15 mins to give you an idea of the size of the place. There is a seperate flat at the top of the house, which is kitted out with a kitchen and small lounge, where we opted to stay before the rest of the party arrived. All bedrooms were very spacious and there was no complaints from anyone from the party who stopped in any of the rooms.

The 'Red Room' is a large lounge with a fireplace in the middle of the room and this was where the partying took place. There was a karaoke machine in there complete with 2 mic's and a set of karaoke cd's. There was also a Hi-Fi system which gave ample sound for a good disco. A table football machine was also there but this was one of the cheap ones. You could also play table tennis but the paddles provided were old and damaged but we were'nt really bothered about that.

The kitchen had all the facilities you'd expect but I have to say the large beer fridge was a really nice touch!!

There is a pub within a few minutes walk in the village which we went to for a few games of pool. They also serve food.

The house has a list of recommended contacts for entertainment, catering etc which we took advantage of by booking a Magician a few months in advance - Simple Simon, I'd definatly recommend him, his tricks will leave you amazed!

Also, we hired some caterers for the evening http://www.nibbledcatering.co.uk/ These were not on the recommended list from the house, but they should be included soon. If you do need caterers, look no further than Nibbled - I'll happily give a reference. They were so friendly, professional and the food they cooked for you was beautiful.

Overall, a great venue for a great birthday weekend. I would go back again given the chance!

Cholwell Hall in Somerset is an excellent location for a large group occasion. The house is spacious and the facilities available are excellent. The lounge area does have a slight feel of a youth centre (complete with karaoke) but the formal dining room more than makes up for this. The outside (splash) pool is clean and the play fort will entertain young children for hours. Overall the accomodation is excellent. The only downside is the behaviour of the owner/proprietor who although listed as a contact was very rude when contacted and clearly not interested in booking arrangements. If you do contact him, rather than Lucy, expect a sharp and blunt conversation.
