El Palacio is a beautiful colonial building fronting one side of the main square. It houses a library and a museum of Campeche city history. The museum is mildly interesting but suffers by being spread out on both sides of the library with unclear directions for getting from one part to the other. On weekends at 8 pm there is a fantastic light show projected on the facade from the park in the square. This show is much more sophisticated and poetic than any light shows you may see in Merida or at archaeological sites. It is absolutely delightful! On the Friday evening we attended, a very good marimba concert preceded the light show.

This museum provides an excellent compact history of Campeche and has good exhibits. There is a free guided tour with added attractions that you should take even if only available in Spanish

There is a great small museum inside the Palacio Centro Cultural. It's exceptionally well done, with multimedia and explanations in flawless English. It's about the history of the city and socio-political issues related to it. The museum is free and it's well worth a visit. The center also had a fantastic digital show projected onto its facade on Saturday night. It was stunning.

The museum is free and divided into sections on the history of Campeche, trade in the 17th & 18th centuries, colonization, and historic fortifications. The light show is shown against the backdrop of the building and can be viewed from the square every Fri, Sat, and Sun evenings at 8 p.m. - it is fantastic! Do NOT miss the light show if you are in Campeche on the weekend.
