We visited Calakmul with Ezequiel, it was wonderful. He knows a lot and explain very well the history, the animals and the plants.
Thank you very much for your comments. WE really appreciate you took sometime to leave a review for us and our future guests!
Hope to see you soon again sometime!
My better half and I were traveling to Xpujil for the sole reason of visiting Calakmul. Though we had a car rental and had planned on visiting the site on our own, the day before our visit we decided to book a tour with Ka'an Expeditions, (just didn't want to deal with the logistics of getting to the site) and wholeheartedly recommend them for the following reasons:
1. Great service. We booked a tour to take place New Year's Eve on less than a day's notice. The Ka'an Expeditions staff was prompt to respond to my query, addressed all of my questions via email, and was able to get us confirmed on our desired tour: "Calakmul Ancient Maya City and Biosphere Reserve". Furthermore, our guide Enrique, "Quique" was fantastic. The entire experience from booking to the moment Quique dropped us off at our hotel following the tour was seamless.
2. Knowledgeable guides. Quique was a wonderful guide. Over the course of the 3 or so hours we spent on the site, he trekked up every pyramid with us and provided invaluable information that truly enhanced our visit. We talked at length about the history of the site and where it fit in to the broader context of the Mayan Civilization during it's peak. We discussed Calakmul's "discovery" and the ongoing work that is being done today, and of course we talked about what we were actually looking at. There wasn't a single question he didn't have an answer to.
3. Value. The price of your tour includes the following: round trip transport from your hotel (we were staying in Xpujil and the trip was two hours EACH WAY); entrance fees to the site; expert guide; some wildlife viewing (Quique pointed out wild turkeys, two different types of monkeys, and a variety of birds we probably would have missed on our own), and a picnic lunch following the tour.
If for no other reason, the transport alone makes this worth it. Believe me, by the end of the day you'll be drained and the last thing you'll want to do is endure a long car ride back to your hotel.
A few things to note that undoubtedly enhanced our experience: we were the only people booked on the tour so we pretty much had a private guide; we did the tour in Spanish because that was the only option available on such short notice. Both my companion and I are native Spanish speakers, so this wasn't an issue.
Ka'an Expeditions also offers tours for other sites and I look forward to experiencing them should I be so fortunate as to be in the area again in the future.
We knew Calakmul would be fantastic, what we could not foresee was the vast knowledge and patient explanations provided by our extraordinary guide, and now friend, Ezekiel Uniuich. I am a history buff and he was able to answer every question and more with details of latest research. My wife is a lifelong gardener and to her surprise he could name and fully describe every flower, plant, tree and nut that we encountered in our full day.
If you come into the Rio Bec area and plan on using a guide - you must, must, work with Ezekial.
The guide was of Mayan heritage and was incredibly knowledgeable and spoke English well. It's a bit of a long drive through windy roads to get down to Calakmul so I would definitely recommend getting a guided day trip. Ka'an expeditions is reasonably priced, has a sturdy, clean van, and are super friendly, trustworthy people.
