Bungalows in very bad shape - furniture not adequate and in poor condition - kitchens not furnished - no utensils, plates, coffee pot, etc. ( they did supply after I made a list and presented to management) -
Beach location is beautiful - pool lovely but very, very cold - hot tub hot later in day (they did drain it everyday so water was clean) - staff pleasant - at booking we were guaranteed two units side by side - on arrival we were given two units but one on each end of the property - not exactly the family vacation we planned. There were other people waiting for rooms - many people being moved from one place to another. A real mess!! This could be a great place but needs tons of work and a management group that has a clue on how to run and maintain. I would never go there again - a huge expense for the little we received !!!

Room tip: Any beachfront unit would be ideal -- probably not right near the pool area.

I've been coming to the surf colony every year for over 5 years. After the hurricane (Oct 2014?), they struggled to repair & rebuild the casitas and they were in terrible condition. When I returned in Dec 2016, I was pleasantly surprised! The colony is under new management and they are working hard to bring the casitas back to their original condition. Our unit had brand new sheets and towels. Kitchen was fully stocked (blender, microwave, coffee maker, toaster, utensils, dishes, cookware, etc). The screen doors are still a little bent but our fans were working and we always had hot water. I can't speak to the food quality at the restaurant as we cooked meals in our unit or ate out but the staff is very friendly and accommodating. The tile work in the casitas is beautiful and you can't beat the view from the ocean front units! I have no complaints from our stay this year and we plan to return.
Don't be scared off by the reviews between 2014 and 2016! The surf colony is making a comeback! Ole!

Room tip: You can hear the ocean from all of the units but ocean front is where its at for the sunsets.

This is a tough, tough review for me to write. I wanted to love it, I tried. I had issues and emailed management after our trip and have not heard back from them so...now I write.
We booked this on a Groupon. Four nights in a 2-bedroom that supposedly sleeps 5. You pay a certain amount for the Groupon (I think it was $399) then when you call to reserve, you pay an additional $50 non-refundable deposit, THEN when you check in, you pay your MX taxes (about $75). So about $525 for four nights for five people. Still seemed like a great deal.

Okay, so we booked in February for a trip in November. I asked for ocean front and she said "no problem. There's plenty of room." Sweet! I knew from reading other reviews that there is no A/C and our fans would probably not be working etc etc. We made all sorts of plans for ocean front.

We arrived on a HOT day (89 degrees) to check in to find we are NOT ocean front and were told that they were "all full" and could not move us around (side note: there were several units that were dark the entire time we were there). I wanted to understand why our request was not communicated but instead she acted like I was getting upset and she basically shut me down. I just wanted to know how to book so that if we decided to come back, we could have ocean front. What's the secret? I still never figured that out. Anyway, before we left the office I asked if everything was in the room (towels) because I saw a spot where I had to sign that said "checking out towels." She said that yes, everything was there.

So we checked out our place. One bedroom had a double bed and another had a king bed...that's it. Where does the 5th person sleep? If you think it's the couch, you would be wrong because a) it was so worn down we couldn't even sit on it without sinking so much and b) there were ZERO other linens to speak of. I'm talking no extra blankets, towels, sheets, pillows or anything. Every single drawer, cabinet, chest, armoire etc was empty. We ended up with my son sharing a bed with his grandfather and my daughter sharing a bed with us. So much for a romantic vacation, not that we could have seen the ocean anyway.

By now, it's dark but the kids want to swim...no towels. We checked every crevice of the place. Back I went to the hostess who hates me and asked for towels. She kept asking "are you sure there are no towels?" Yeah, I'm pretty sure. She gave us 5 striped/pool towels and said she would bring us 5 bath towels later. Gee, thanks. 2 of the 5 striped towels were unraveling and had holes in them...whatever (they were NEVER replaced during our stay). We swam, had dinner and the worst night of sleep ever. We were only given 4 pillows so I shared one with my daughter. Not the type of mother-daughter bonding time I had in mind.
Also, the bath towels did arrive. Two of them had holes and two of the days we were there, the housekeeper only replaced 4 of the 5 towels. I had to go see my favorite person several more times to get an extra towel.

In the morning we woke up early to head to our excursion in La Paz and surprise...no water. The office doesn't open until 7 so there was nothing we could do because we left at 6am. We only hoped the water would be back on when we got back (it was). I went to the office to ask for extra pillows (at least one) and was promptly told that there are none. I re-iterated that we were in a place that sleep 5, we had 5 people sleeping there and only 4 pillows. She managed to scrounge up an extra pillow for us.

Other frustrating things: no lighter to light the stove/oven, no microwave, no coffee maker, only a small handful of forks, knives etc (we bought plastic anyway), no hand towels, no washcloths, nowhere to hang clothes, no extra toilet paper anywhere. Miscommunication - was told we could swim at Hacienda and we get there only to be laughed at, no more sharing amenities.

Now, you may think it was all bad but there was a lot of good. All of our ceiling fans worked, we could hear the ocean in our room and you cannot beat the proximity to the beach. The pool is beautiful and the beach was even better. We had zero issues with bugs until the very last morning and only had very small issues with ants here and there.
There are a ton of amazing places to eat just 7-ish minutes from the colony so you don't need to eat at their overpriced pool bar. We ate dinner there the first night, no menus, were told "we only have tacos and quesadillas, chicken or steak, nothing else right now."
On our way from the airport we stopped at the store and picked up plates, forks, bowls, spoons, cereal, water, beer, chips, yogurt and a few other snacky items. This helped our mornings tremendously because my daughter and I could have cereal when we woke up at 4am (no joke) and then have breakfast with the family at a restaurant later.

Now that I am back in the real world, I tried to contact management to see if there was anything they would do to help us out with the oceanfront issue but nobody has responded to me (it's been over a week). We want to go back and have checked out other (less expensive) places along the beach but nothing beats the location of Cerritos. Unfortunately, I just don't know if we can go back because of the very poor service and miscommunication we continually received throughout our entire visit.

I am writing this review to give travelers are realistic expectation of the Cerritos Surf Colony. It’s not “perfect” or “exceptional”. It’s not a “dump”. We are seasoned travelers and have stayed in hammocks in Indonesia, backpacked through Australia, and also stayed in 5-star plus resorts. It’s easier to give you a list of pros and cons, at least from our experience at Cerritos Surf Colony. We stayed 6 nights in a 1-bedroom villa with a single king-size bed.

Pros:
Hotel is quiet and isolated. Nothing but the sound of the surf at night.
The grounds are clean, the rooms are acceptably clean, the staff is very kind and friendly.
The pool and bar/restaurant area is beautiful.
Free and safe parking.
Perfectly located to travel around between Cabo and La Paz and points in between.
Maid service was predictable and perfect.
Our hot water worked perfectly and our shower was huge and beautifully tiled.

Cons:
If you plan to cook meals, the kitchen is just “OK” but beware that there are hardly any utensils and the pots and pans are in awful condition. Frying pans with no handles, melted serving spoons, miss-matched everything, no knives, cutting board, or large bowls. I knew this going in from reading the reviews here (thank you Trip Advisor) and I brought several items with me. No can opener, corkscrew, no hot pads. No coffee maker. No paper towels or kitchen towels. Best word to describe the kitchen: primitive. I’m an Eagle Scout and we made do, enjoyed some excellent home cooked meals.

There are no wash cloths, shower mats, door mats, or hand towels of any kind. You will get 2 bath towels and 2 pool towels. That’s it.

The food and drinks at the pool side restaurant are very expensive, comparatively. Beer is $4 US per bottle. A margarita is $8. A 12-pack of beer at the Ossa gas station is $140 pesos, which is about $7 dollars US, so you get the idea. The food was quite good, but I’d rather spend WAY less to eat in Todos Santos or elsewhere.

There is no A/C and only 1 of our 2 ceiling fans worked. Thankfully, it was the fan in the bedroom so we were comfortable at night. We had no issues with any biting insects, our door screen and window screens were intact. No TV, books, or board games in the room. No Wifi except by the pool, and it was super slow.

Most importantly, we used a Groupon promotion to stay there. There is no way the Cerritos Surf Colony is worth their full retail price. DO NOT stay there for full retail. We paid $399.00 for 6 nights plus the applicable fees and we had an excellent stay for that value. All in all, it was perfect for our needs. November was very pleasant at night with no AC but in the dead of summer I’ll bet it’s another story, so traveler beware.

If the Cerritos Surf Colony spent just a few thousand dollars, this place could be exceptional. New pots, pans and utensils in the kitchens. Coffee makers for each room. Door mats and shower mats. Fix the broken fans. Buy some second-hand books and board games. The owner (not the staff) must have a general “hey, you guys are on your own” attitude.

Room tip: Try to stay in the first row, these units are ocean view. The back row has minimal ocean view.

My husband and I have been to cerritos surf club about 6 times over the last 9 years. It started lovely. The Casitas were new and well supplied. However as time went on and Rodger Pollock's legal problems got bigger the place went to hell in a hand basket. Some of the staff we met the last time we stayed there were" wanted " in the US. Roofs with holes, no towels, sheets shredded , no kitchen utensils, water heater leaking in closet, doors you can't lock, refrigerator leaking and barely keeping your groceries cool. BUGS IN YOUR CASITA EVERYWHERE. The pool is lovely and our meals were pretty good most times. I think the staff try to do the right thing without any help or money to keep people happy. We have been staying at cerritos now from 15 years. There are lovely vrbo and Puesta del sol is our favorite. Beds are horrible

Room tip: Don't stay there. No casita is worth the price they are asking
