Description: The Great House pub and restaurant, between the Kent villages of Cranbrook and Hawkshurst, is set in some of the most celebrated countryside in all of Europe. Within its own superbly kept grounds, this 16th century inn more than lives up to its location with roaring log fires, ancient beams and Mediterranean inspired terrace for summer time al fresco dining, leading on to a typically Kentish garden, complete with aromatic herbs and a lynch gate. The Great House is known throughout the area as one of the loveliest places to dine, earning awards for its food and its atmosphere, offering not only a wealth of wines and well kept beers on tap but a full, delicious menu of both old fashioned British favourites and contemporary, exotic dishes, each made using locally sourced, high quality and fresh ingredients. A real family favourite, The Great House welcomes children with a specially composed menu of tempting but healthy options in smaller sized portions.

Although our table wasn't ready when we arrived, the rest of the experience was very good. The ham off the bone as a starter is lovely. I had a perfect fillet steak; others enjoyed the fish and chips and the prawn linguini. And what a treat to discover a full range of ice creams instead of the usual strawberry, vanilla and chocolate! Try honeycomb, mint choc and pecan nut. Delicious.

We had a family Sunday lunch with grandparents and children and we were seated in The Barn that looks recently renovated. We ordered the day's special, venison burger, fish and chips, mixed grill platter and some puddings. Huge portions and we all found the food really tasty. The staff was very friendly. Live music. We will be back!

Christmas Lunch menus can be delish or disaster - this was delish. Chunky game terrine was seriously lean & meaty if a trifle chewy in places, good flavour & pleasant fruity sauce. Two sorts of fresh warm toast but would have liked butter too. Turkey was really good, nice & moist, fresh tasting - with ballotine leg as well as breast slices. Wonderful miniature glazed parsnips, decent bacon wrapped sausage, all the rest just very nice. Chocolate brownie was properly warm & gooey, with good ice cream & choc sauce. Portions were generous, & a wee madeleine with coffees/teas. Main car park quite a trek to the front door if it's raining.
